View Full Version : Anyone have experience w/ Pirelli Slick compounds? txse46m3 09-02-2007, 07:09 PM Wondering how many heat cycles the D6 compound is good for. Anyone know? Steve J. 09-02-2007, 09:37 PM What type of use? Is this for track, race, or autox? You can get 20+ heat cycles (20-30min test sessions) on D5's under some circumstances and conditions. On the D6's you should be able to get atleast a dozen assuming you started with a sticker tire and ran them in properly. But, if you are in texas and its very hot outside, with such a soft compound, if you push hard from the start and "abuse" them, you won't get more then a day or two out of them. On the Ferrari challenge cars we run the Pirelli D5's for quite sometime before they finally giveup. Thats one of the benefits I've found with the Pirelli, while they don't offer the peak grip values Yok/michelin/Dunlop offer in similar compound, they will not drop off suddenly. For comparison though I had some Dunlop scrubs mounted up on the 360ch and they were pretty bad without the car being setup for them. On those cars at least (the m3 is probably more forgiving) the dunlop requires a different susp setup to get them to stick. Mostly I had turn in grip problems, once in the turn the dunlops stuck. Going back to Pirelli's on that car though...unless I get a deal on michelins, they'll go nicely with the Ohlins setup i'm designing for the car:) How heavy is the car? Is this the car in your sig description? What size tires? Steve J. 09-03-2007, 12:52 AM New or Scrubs? Hard to fine decent Pirelli Scrubs anymore, but Woodman distributes Pirelli, also tough to get stickers from him recently. ralphwarren 09-03-2007, 02:32 AM I ran the D5 slicks in the past and noticed that they were about .2 to .3 seconds a lap slower per heat cycle. If you want to know how many heat cycles they are good for, you need first determine what "good" means to you? If you are a top driver in a top car going for a championship with other very competitive cars close to you in time and position throughout the weekend then "good" (as far as tire condition goes) to that person might mean you only get 1 weekend out of a set of tire or about 5 or 6 heat cycles. If you and your car are growing and there's testing and learning to be done, then 20 heat cycles is very reasonable. I have noticed with slicks that they harden from weekend to weekend a hell of a lot more than the way they harden from Saturday to Sunday. A set of slicks with only 3 heat cycles on them that are months old are considered crap by me. Also, when you buy used slicks you might wind up with a tire that is one month old on the front right and a tire that is 4 months old on the left rear. I used to chase my ass around with setup issues in practice just to have to start all over when new or different tires went on the car. I realized at about the same time as Brad Otoupalik and Jon Holder that it wasn't worth saving $800 on tires to screw up a weekend that cost many times that to be a part of. Front runners in most competitive club race classes bring a new set of slicks to the track every weekend - even the prepared guys on DOT tires. -Ralph Warren txse46m3 09-03-2007, 09:59 AM What type of use? Looking at 245/650-18 in the Pirelli or 24/64 Mich Porche Cup's on a 9" wheel Steve J. 09-03-2007, 11:13 AM If you are looking to be very competitive at O-fest, I'd suggest this...its not cheap but you'll get good results (well, assuming you can setup a car lol). 1. Order three sets of sticker Michelins. 2. Setup 1-2 test days to set the car up on michelins on one of the sets. 3. Scrub in the second and third set with 1 session. 4. Run the test day 1 tire for practices, and 1session scrubs for qual/races. On a side note: 9" is a bit small in my opinion for those tires. How much horsepower do you have? Dm I assume? You can always go with some 230 yoks, in their softest compound you'll be stuck to the track pretty damn well. My old wc e36 dm was on scrub yok 230's all around, and it was Solid. I never even tried sticker tires on it, but I loved how the yoks felt. Any reason you are not looking at Yoks? You can get a pretty competitive price from Brad/Evosport. Also, there is a new-er porsche cup tire, they are using S8/S9 compunds I believe which are harder than the previous setup (S7), but i've heard really good things about them. The most important thing is to have the car setup for the tire. No matter which tire you choose, you have to have the car setup properly to take advantage of any benefits that tire may have over others. I'd definitely stress getting 1-2 test days on a new slick, especially if you have not driven the car on slicks, or more specifically those brand/compounds. txse46m3 09-03-2007, 11:57 AM If you are looking to be very competitive at O-fest, I'd suggest this...its not cheap but you'll get good results (well, assuming you can setup a car lol). 1. I'm not going to be competitive w/in DM. 216hp SAE isn't going to get it done by any margin. I do want to be competitive w/ the other GTS-3 class cars there though (IP/HP). I won't ruin anyone's race to hold a position, but I'm going to have some fun too. With that in mind, I'm not going to spend a fortune. This is more a live test session than a race for me. My thought, at the moment, is to run another set of take-offs on Friday and then a sticker set Saturday and Sunday. That way I can get the setup done w/o roasting a set of $1400 tires and get a good idea of the car's relative speed, strengths and weaknesses, and tire life and grip levels over multiple heat cycles. I'm not looking at Yok's because they seem to come in 650 dia only. The 640 height works out really, really well at TWS...a good lap I just brush the rev limit in 5th at TWS on the front straight. MSR is a much slower track and taking away the gearing will hurt pretty badly. I've driven the car on take off P-cup slicks twice. My current thought is to te Steve J. 09-03-2007, 01:50 PM Which Michelin gt3 cup tires did you use though, there is a difference. The only problem with that is you will be setting up the car to the scrubs which could require a different setup than the stickers, so you could very well end up chasing problems twice, even though its the same tire. It'll be interesting to see how you do with lower power and lower weight. You should be able to out corner and out brake the IP/Hp guys, although if you are going up against top IP and HP (e46 m3) guys, you'll most likely get blown away, down 100hp+. Let us know which tires you decide on, i'm interested to see how your times compare with the michelins if you chose them. I recently became aware of a good hookup for michelins direct from michelin, so I'm contemplating setting my car up for them instead of the Yoks...but its a tough call due to availability. txse46m3 09-03-2007, 04:20 PM Which Michelin gt3 cup tires did you use though, there is a difference. Share the hookup and I'll share the data. Steve J. 09-03-2007, 05:47 PM Which Porsche cup tires, scrubs from 06 or 07? There are different compounds apparently that are being run. Your data will be your laptimes :) Goodluck at the race, its coming up quick, and it should be a great event. txse46m3 09-03-2007, 08:39 PM Which Porsche cup tires, scrubs from 06 or 07? Yes, you'll be able to see my laptimes. But a) that wont be all the data, b) you won't know who is driving, and c) you won't know where a setup change skewed the data. Anywho...the tires were 07. |
