View Full Version : Home alarm systems?
thurst0509 09-02-2007, 04:29 PM We're looking into getting an alarm system installed at our house. The previous owners installed one, but it's not monitored at all and is a bit of a hackjob.
Who do you all use? Anyone have any recommendations, hookups, coupons etc?
razahyde 09-02-2007, 06:15 PM guns usually work well.
says the kid in highschool...
Brinks at my house... But I also live in HP... so the cops are always near for some reason...
My Grandfather Also used Brinks.
ADT was a popular one I saw around here when I was a kid also.
NorchaiOdd 09-02-2007, 07:59 PM my AR15 works great for me...

i agree.
ar15, 1911, cz75 all within reach seem to serve me well. all though, i have insurance, and don't really put much value on anything i can't lock in the safe.
SecretAznSauce 09-03-2007, 09:45 AM thats how i see it, i have insurance, they will pay. for self protection. I have a hanging bell at the front and back door. Unwelcomed visitors will be talking to my officer 9mm. both of them. or my swords, or my chopstick throwing skills.
Michael-Dallas 09-03-2007, 11:09 AM Weapons work great when an intrusion occurs while you're home. But when you're not home, such as at work, then I hope any intruders do not find your weapons.
We used ADT (what builder's install) on our first house. Now we use Smith-Thompson, owned and monitored locally in Plano. They cost half as much as ADT or Brinks. Even less if you don't subscribe to a land-line specifically for home monitoring.

thurst0509 09-03-2007, 11:16 AM Yeah. We're not gun nuts and don't keep any in the house - I've thought of getting a pump-action shotgun for its pee-your-pants scare factor and ease of use in case I ever need protection.
Anyways, the alarm is more for peace of mind for my wife. I think it would make her feel a lot better knowing there's someone monitoring in case anything were to happen. And if nothing else maybe it will act as a deterrent, enough to make a thief choose another house...
Rahul325 09-04-2007, 05:00 PM i use smith thompson(have been for past 2 yrs), its $16.95/mo w/o contract. www.smiththompson.com
i currently have their wireless option(no need for land line)
v prompt response, zero issues till date.
Austin 09-04-2007, 09:13 PM I plan on digging the pit of death near the front door incase someone tries to enter that way. In the bedrooms I'll have trained killer attack monkeys.
House we bought has an alarm installed so I'm also currently looking into alarm companies. Smith Thompson sounds good.

Was the system already in place, or did they install it?
Their installation prices seem pretty steep for a system with only a few zones. I'm afraid we'll need a new system since the current one in our house seems like a major hackjob with half the zones not working. Might be worth having them send someone to check it out and see if it's salvageable though...
