View Full Version : Exceedingly hot gear shift knob while racing

First time this has occurred. While at Summit Point last weekend, during the Sat. sprint...my gear shift knob became extremely hot. At the end of the sprint race, they were handing out iced down towels. Removed my gloves and went to touch the shifter and that thing could've fried an egg.

It's a metallic stock looking kind of knob. Still, I wouldn't think that it would be that hot. It was hot at the track...but, again it was just a sprint race, not an enduro.

Thoughts?

I'm having a lightweight flywheel and clutch installed before Road Atlanta, should we be looking for anything within the tranny?

I wonder if the exhaust has ended up making contact with the bottom of the shifter. That would conduct heat up to the knob.

Psuedo,

Very good point. It's possible that my exhaust could've shifted a bit with the hit that the car took while at VIR. I need to check for sure. Good thinking!!!

Definitely not what happened. It's not like I was racing with an open sunroof panel.;)

I wouldn't worry about it, I had a Breyton Aluminum gear shift knob on my STREET car, that would heat up like CRAZY just from driving around. Tranny was fine - I changed the gearshift knob to a leather wrapped one, and problem disappeared.

Great excuse for a JAFSTER KNOB!! Delrin!!

Jon beat me too it :)

Call up Tony @ TC Design and order up a TC/Jaffster knob, problem solved :)

Transmission tunnels get hot. You can reduce the interior temp by putting heat barrier/blockers underneath on top of the trans tunnel. Along the firewall helps as well.

Hey Ken,

Nice to finally meet ya! That weekend was CRAZY HOT. I cant recall my knob being hot, but I usually have gloves on :stickoutt

I imagine with the temps as hot as they were, it isnt surprising to have the shaft heat up. Hell, my oil temps hit 250 for the first time.

if your exhaust shifted enough to contact your shifter you'd be in real trouble because it just went through your driveshaft!!! I doubt its your trany either because it would have to transfer all that heat through the shifter bushing, down the shaft through the delrin(i assume) cup. That's a long way get all that way. it's probably just the heat of the day and a hot exhaust and a metal shift knob. It would be a good time to get a jaffster or Ceegeez delrin shift knob!! :-D

I wasn't choking it that hard:devillook

Wonger, nice to meet you as well. Yeah, I think I was seeing 240's on oil and 210 for water. I ran that day without an electric fan. That was a bit disconcerting, but it worked out OK.

Speaking of heat. I suffered heat exhaustion/dehydration Saturday evening and couldn't function on Sunday. I'd been drinking lots of water, but the 3 days spent at home in the 100+ degree garage had taken it's toll and caught up with me in very short order. I'm mentioning this 'cause it's serious stuff guys. You don't want to mess with that kind of illness. I've since learned that banana's, water and gatorade are your friends. You also don't want to be working on your car the day you're supposed to be making a 7 hour tow and not leave home until 8pm Friday eve.:eyecrazy
Other than that, it was a fun day:D

Nice, just don't forget to drink a ton of water :) I've had heat exhaustion a couple times, fortunately not at the track though. Its kind of scary because you can get very ill from it, and it can many times just hit you like a ton of bricks all of a sudden.

You're absolutely right Steve. I'm so thankful that it hit me at 1:15 am and not on the track!
What's so ironic is that I felt really good Saturday evening. We were out having dinner and couldn't wait to get a good nights sleep. And, whammo.

Live and learn, right.

You really need to drink a ton of water during the week leading up to the event. Waiting until the morning of the race to start chuggin' water doesn't do a whole lot of good.

My Rob Knob from UUC gets WICKED hot in the texas sun. :-( When my M3 was a street car I would leave my hat on it, so it would not be HOT AS THE SUN hot, and even still, I needed to shift with the hat on it for the first couple of miles until some heat transferred out of it...

I think you have to be at the track to get it at the track! :devillook

My knob looks like a honey dropper so it can sink heat if needed. It's aluminum and looks mad-tite. :buttrock

I only had time to get to the track 3 times this year playing with the Challenges...hopefully I can finish the e46 and get it out there next season, but life kind of gets in the way :) (plus waiting for a garage to be finished Sucks)

I know you are busting my balls, you don't have to make another post for it..it's not like I take anything you post seriously anyways lol
