it only works when the outside temp is below a certain degree- think it's in the 50 degree range.

thats not true, mine works regardless of the outside temperature. Mines does cool and hot air, basically whatever is left in the system.

you press it when the car is OFF and it recirculates air into the cabin.

fyi you can also set 2 different timers for the heater/cooler to come on to whatever setting you had it on.

EX: your car turns heat on 30mins before you get in.

I don't know what I did the other day, but I was cleaning my car, and I happened to hit the rest button, and it actually turned on! I was so surprised, I had never seen it turn on in my car.

How do we do this? Do I set the time on the MID?

The REST button is for heat. How do you get cold air when the engine/comprosser is off?

My '02 530i doesn't have that button, where does it live on yours? I do have the MK2 (I think) navigation, and using that screen I can set 2 timers as described above. How does one set time on for those older and/or non-nav cars?

Your HVAC unit has the MAX button instead of the REST button...if you refer to your owners manual...it will tell you that when the ambient temp is below 59 degrees (F)...if you press the MAX button (it will do the same function as the REST button). :D

Do you have your BUSINESS MID or Navigation owners manual? The instructions on how to set a timed vent is written in those manuals. You can also do a search...I wrote this up a few months ago for those who have a MID. I don't have Navigation so I don't know how to set those units up.

Briefly, there are 2 types of timed events...there is the VENT ON feature (which is the "summer" version of REST) where the blower will run 30 minutes or until you return to the car and turn the ignition on...AND...there's the 1TIMER2 feature that allows you to set 2 timed events (the info will remain in memory and all you have to do is turn it on again when you want it).

The VENT ON feature can be accessed when you press the "clock face" button and the ignition is in POSITION 1 (only). The 1 TIMER 2 feature can be access when you press the "clock face" button and the ignition can be in either POSITION 1 or POSITION 2.

You can see the VENT ON & 1 TIMER 2 features illuminated with the ignition in position 1.

(the owner manuals are a terrible thing to NOT read... ...you can miss all kinds of small features your car has...if you don't have all of your manuals...you can download many of them in PDF format from www.e38.org/e39 )
