View Full Version : Single Large Exhaust Pipe for 540i6 Sport?

I like the looks of the stock pipe with the single (3" I think) pipe. I'd like to upgrade the exhaust system soon to get a little better sound, but I don't want to use the dual tip systems.

If none available, would I get more sound by changing the cats or other parts of the system but keeping the final muffler stock?

Thanks, Sam

I had a local muffler shop install a Magnaflow muffler, remove my y-resonator, and install a simple oval tip.

A single 3.5 inch or larger single exhaust tip looks ricy to me but others like it. Most Sports Sedans having only one single exhaust have to pipes exiting, but like I said you know what you want.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like they are available...

Dumb question coming.... What is the resonator, and where is it. Does removing it make a difference in performance or sound, or both?

Someone please educate me on this... :confused

If I removed the resonator and changed the cats to something else higher flow (I think they need replaced anyway), would I get some performance gains and maybe a little bit more sound?

I'm torn with the exhause because I do like my car somewhat quiet. but I'd just like it to be just a little louder. I'm worried that if I change the final muffler it may be a little too loud...

If anyone can comment on that mod, please jump in.

Thanks!

The resonator is the big y shaped muffler after the cats and before the rear muffler. if it is taken out your car gets louder and a bit more raspy at top end(from my experience) it may give you little to no gains resonator alone. if hi flow cats no resonator and magnaflow muffler are done you can get good gains.

I bought a magnaflow race series muffler for 80 shipped on ebay and then got it installed at a shop for 150. i just had a 3 inch pipe welded right on the Xpipe after the cats and that goes into the magnaflow. if you have a 540 i would recommend a race series because the inlet is 3 inch as well as the core unlike the street series which is 2.25 inlet AND core. so even if you cut the body to 3 inch its quite as good as a race series. it sounds heavenly, i haven't had a good camera to use.
