I'm about to move out, so I'd like to take my 12 year old sister on a trip before I go. 4 day weekend sounds like a great opportunity for this.

I was thinking about driving up to SLO on Friday night, then up to Monterey on Saturday. We'd go to the aquarium, see Point Lobos, etc.

But I'm open to other options. I've been all over CA:

Every national park south of South of Yosemite, the coast as far north as San Fran, all over the desert. Been to Mt. Shasta, Lassen and Lake Shasta. Been to Tahoe, been to the Eastern Sierra. So, does anyone have other options for me? It doesn't have to be something I haven't seen before. First choice was San Fran, but with the bridge down, no thank you.

Vegas.

j/k...a cruise up the 1 would be pretty fun, stopping along the little towns.

Possible options that might interest a 12-yr-old:

Santa Cruz
Hearst Castle
Catalina
Great America

in addition to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur area. (Include lunch at Nepenthe on the way.)

She's seen Hearst Castle, I've been thinking about it though. What is there to see in Santa Cruz and what is Great America? Catalina... never been but I don't think that's where I want to go.

don't remind me of the traffic this weekend, i live in SF... :(

Great America is an amusement theme park in Santa Clara (5 min north of San Jose). I don't think it'll compare to the six flags down in so cal though. In the end, it's all about San Francisco in Northern California. What I would even recommend is to park on the edge of the city and take public transportation. Cable cars and Muni/Bart (subway) will take you everywhere you'd want to go. there's plenty to do in SF besides the tourist attractions (Sony Metreon for example)

If you're going to Monterey, be sure to check out Laguna Seca.

What is there to see in Santa Cruz ....

Santa Cruz has an amusement park on the beach. It is somewhat old fashioned compared to modern themeparks, so it depends somewhat on her (and your) preferences. See: http://www.beachboardwalk.com/

As a comparison, there is an interesting state beach "Natural Bridges" nearby: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=541

And a bit further north, there are elephant seals at Ano Nuevo SB: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=523

Highway 1 between them all is spectacular.

Make sure you visit Carmel (its >>> Monterey) and drive up highway 1 from SLO.

Maybe I'll pass you on the way down. Want to street race?

I was just at Laguna Seca this past weekend tracking the M3.

Great weather is all I can say.

Get a burger and beer at the Tavern at Pebble Beach.

Sounds like you planned a fun trip though SB. Make sure and wave if you see a Dakar M3 on Kosei's in Monterey/Carmel. :)

It might come close you never know. It does have some decent rides like drop zone, invertigo, top-gun, etc. But since you live in So Cal you've probably been to magic mountain, and that park trounces Great America in pretty much every way.
