I have a 93 525i and the stock headend just died:(. I was hoping that someone could suggest a replacement as BMW no longer supports this model.

I am closing on the big five o, so I am not looking for the killer 1000+ watt system, (my ears ring enough as it is). I would like a headend that is comparable to the stock one with a amber display if possible.

'93? a CD43 "bmw business radio" http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=817823. These radios work nicely and have that bmw orange display and I believe (not sure) track info for digital radio stations. It'll mute with your phone and connect to the cd changer. Should be ~300 ebay or less for a used one from here.
