View Full Version : clutch slipping... linkage or clutch at fault?
joshs540i 08-25-2007, 12:29 AM hi i just bought a 98 540i/6 about a week ago. 135k with cdv. i noticed that the clutch grabs right at the top, today it started slipping. if i so much as rest my foot on the pedal it will start to disengage, so it seems to me there is a good chance it is not fully engageing rather than sliping? if so is the linkage adjustable? how?
Thanks
Josh
Petes540i6 08-25-2007, 08:52 AM Your car has a self-adjustable hydraulic clutch. If there were a problem like air in the hydraulic line, I would suspect that you would have difficulty disengaging the clutch, not have difficulty getting it to engage. I'm no expert, but I suspect you will need a new clutch.
Trust me, when you get that car sorted out, you may find that it is the best car you ever had. And welcome.
LanceM 08-25-2007, 03:27 PM Yep, no adjustment, sounds like new clutch time, sorry, mine is close to the same and I'm trying hard to make it last as long as possible. What has happened is that the clutch disk is so thin that the pressure plate doesn't have enough travel to squeeze it tight to the flywheel, hence the "lay your foot on the pedal" disengagement.
joshs540i 08-25-2007, 09:33 PM Pete, Ive had the car before the clutch was slipping so i realize what an awesome machine it is, even with it slipping it still hauls ass :devillook.
Thanks
Lance, Thats what i was afraid of. well it doesnt sound too bad, the car seems well worth it.
2slow2passive 08-28-2007, 04:54 PM I have a new clutch, pressure plate, master and slave cylinders and I am still experiencing clutch slippage. Only in first and second gear, and apparently only when I am really into the gas pedal. It is also a little sticky when shifting gears. Any ideas to what may be the cause? Thanks.
96Ronsi823 10-20-2007, 09:47 PM hey i just installed an performance organic m5 clutch with the stage 2 lightweight flywheel
its been about 500 miles and my clutch still seems to slip like it once did before i got the new clutch.
it only happens when im starting off in 1rst gear, almost like the car is about to stall out.
any ideas?

If you haven't done so already, you may want to delete your CDV. If it is defective it might do what you are describing. BTW , you don't want to replace it, just delete it.

I am a machinist and was just wondering if you had the flywheel re-surfaced as they get the glazed shiny finish with blue 900 degrees and straw 540 degrees of heat damage and need to be machined off (ground). In order for the clutch disc to settle in. Hope this helps.
