As for your car, I like it.
Thanks, I sent him an email last night.
e21Jason 04-24-2006, 07:52 PM Hi
I just thought i would post detials of my car
Description
This is a much modified 1982 e21 323i it was originally black and is now very black. I bought after three attempts, I have planned to build an e21 to this level but it turned out quicker and cheaper to buy this as a base vehicle to work from.
Modifications and tuning
Engine
M20 2.7 conversion with a lightened and balanced bottom end, gas flowed head and bigger valves. Currently working on s52 throttle body and efi set up.
Fuelling
Triple Webber 45's set up with dual fuel pumps and filter king adjustable fuel regulator. dynoed at 256BHP (by previous owner I have yet to confirm this). Pushed to 130mph on the speedo
Exhaust
Custom 6 stainless steel 6 branch manifold running to a pair of stainless back boxes. So noisy i have to were ear plugs if i am driving for more than an hour.
Gearbox
Standard e21 dogleg box with uprated clutch and lightened flywheel.
Rear diif
E12 M535i LSD mounted onto a modified e21 rear beam
Brakes
Cross drilled and grooved brakes all round, Volvo 240 callipers at the front e30 at the rear stainless lines throughout.
Suspension
LEDA 24 way adjustable coilovers front and rear, polybushes throughout. ST upgraded sway bars, front & rear strut braces battery in the boot.
Interior
Recaro interior retimed in black leather and black suede, Alpina gear knob, after market steering wheel black headlining, quick shift kit
Exterior
2 pack BMW Black, blacked out chrome, smoked lenses front and rear arch lips rolled 16" alpinas
Driver
Awaiting upgrades BMW better driving day and MSA race license currently working on my heel and toe technique
History
There is a lot of history with this car for small things but not a lot for the big things, parts of the engine and drive train came from a French rally car, the interior was done when it was still a standard e21. What is for sure is that a lot of money has been spent but sometime it seems it took the previous owners 2-3 times to get it right.

BaronOfIpanema 04-25-2006, 12:14 AM dude, put some pics of your car, I'm fron Yonkers and own an e21 too
Man, I noticed that - very cool that we're local. I'd definately love to see what youve done with your car too. Right now my 320 looks about as stock as you can imagine (with the S package). The paint is a bit faded and needs to be addressed and I'm not sure I want to stick with that massive chin spoiler.
I don't know if I explained this before but three days after I picked up my car the driver's side ball jont blew out and I careened off the road (actually you may know the place, the rotunda near Orchard Beach on Shore Rd.). The damage wasn't incredible, but I'm straightening out some parts before I post pics.
I've been thinking about changing the fed bumper to the euro bumper but the event I experienced with this car leads me to believe that I would have had to completely trash my three-day old ride had I been using euro bumpers. The hood, radiator, valance, everything on the right-front would have gone in that simple 5mph impact. It would have been what they call in the insurance biz "totaled". So, I may be staying fed (to keep future costs down, in case...).
Yonkers320is 04-25-2006, 08:35 PM yeah I hear that, I am running bumperless and two minor hits in the FDR ended up being more than 500 bucks in parts.....
BaronOfIpanema 04-30-2006, 10:16 PM I finally got the roll developed - here's a shot sorry about the B&W.
This was just before the accident but she looks more or less the same from this angle now. There's a bit more ding around the front wheel well now due to the tire ripping almost clean off but she made it through ok. Also found a great (meaning reasonably priced and straightforward) body guy in New Rochelle if anyone local needs a referral.
cvestal 05-05-2006, 12:08 AM Just got my new obsession home. This will be my autocrossing car since my wife and I have been a dual driver (SCCA AUTO-X) for 3 years now. We started with MiniCooper S, to Saab 92x, to the now very fun 03 VW VR6. I think once my wife tries a rear wheel drive we will be sharing the 320i..... enough on that.
83 320i
100,010 on the odometer, 30k since rebuild and new clutch. New steering universal assembly, muffler, fuel pump. LSD, Recaros (ratty)
I look forward to communicating & contributing to great site I have been browsing for a while.
can not post picks yet...
peperry 05-15-2006, 01:53 PM I have a 82 320i, hennarot with 187,000 miles. Its in great mechanical shape, but i currently have the interior removed because of a leaky sunroof and windshield gasket. I have a Kamei style air dam and the IS Limited slip. also the items that i have not installed yet are: TEP header, TEP rear battery kit, korman fiberglass hood and trunk, euro sport steering wheel. I just installed bilstein sport shocks and BBS progressive rate springs. my car is now a slot car! lol.
I also have a 1980 that my parents purchased new, however it has lots of rust now and the engine is worn out at 254k miles (most of them autobahn miles as i lived in germany from '87 to '00)
I will post pics as soon as this forum lets me (how many posts are required?)
blitzed310 05-16-2006, 12:14 AM What is the euro steering wheel, or do you mean iS wheel?
My motor also took a crap on me at 254k miles
peperry 05-16-2006, 05:29 PM I believe its the IS wheel, but it looks a bit different as the spokes for it are metal, not plastic. I'll post pics whenever i have enough posts to. my motor has 187,000 on it right now, and it really amazes my how well it runs. It pulls ver strong all the way up to 6k with no smoke.
Aussie323i 06-13-2006, 03:56 AM Hi all
just joined after finding a very tidy 323i for sale in great condition for a good price.
The car is stock as far as I know, 4wheel disc brakes factory bucket seats and go-kart style handeling.
Looking forward to hearing all the tech tips and mods everyone knows.
Cheers
Madhatter 06-13-2006, 04:19 AM hey jason, do you happen to know what side skirts your car has?
Also, what tyres are you running? (size and brand please) :)
Going to do anything about the rear camber? looks to be sporting quite a bit :o
Aussie323i 06-16-2006, 07:25 AM Has anyone tried converting their e21 to injection ?
I've heard that you can use a 325e intake manifold and a later injection setup but I haven't found anyone in WA (Wait a While other wise knowen as western australia) that has done this.
I'm asking as a friend has brought a E21 but due to the rising fuel cost he's thinking of going injected.
cheers
Aussie323i 06-16-2006, 07:28 AM PS Madhatter did you stroke your E30 323i using a 2.7 crank?
I'm thinking of doing this before I get the turbo conversion done.
Madhatter 06-16-2006, 08:57 AM Im about to convert another 323i to L-jet which will have electronic injection, im going to take pics this time so i can do a write up.
No, M3 crank used instead of the eta one

How much are the pistons and what are you boring the m20 to? *85 mm?
Madhatter 06-16-2006, 10:34 AM yes it is.
nothing at the moment, have a set here i think i can use. Otherwise, somewhere around $800 trade.
86mm.
320iGUY 06-29-2006, 01:03 PM can anyone tell me where i can get an s-14 head from a z-3 to swap out on to my 320i
Jmabarone 06-29-2006, 03:57 PM can anyone tell me where i can get an s-14 head from a z-3 to swap out on to my 320i
the S14 came from the e30 M3, as for putting the head on the M10, have fun, I don't think that the oil passages line up or something like that.
Jake
blitzed310 06-29-2006, 04:46 PM Rod, why does your M3 crank and Joes crank look totally different, in terms of the counter weights?
Madhatter 06-30-2006, 04:30 AM I was wondering the same thing last week. Just wondering if it came from an earlier engine or vice versa. I know its been balanced and have some weight removed, but they look quite a bit different.

Hmm. Mine is from a US 95 m3 so its an S50.
Is yours from the same exact engine? What is the numbers or writing on the crank itself?

1983 e21 320i
Just got my first car as a hand me down from my grandpa. It looks like it has all stock parts except for a few recent replacements (for the same thing). Still got the huge bumper, maybe I should downsize that…
Something was wrong with the charging circuit and after consulting a couple neighbors, decided to replace the alternator. It needs some new paint since some spots are pealing off.
One major problem: It looks like one of the front shocks is busted :-0 so I get to fix that at some point in the near future… I hope that’s the last of it’s problems… Wish me luck.
<o:p> </o:p>
Future: Clean out the engine and make it look all shiny :-D
brock73 07-06-2006, 05:05 AM My name is Brent
I will answer to Brock as well.
I am a born and raised Kiwi.
Unlike my car. An E21 1982 320/6
The car was brought by an older man from Wood of Bourneworth England. It was driven till 1987 when he packed it up and moved to New Zealand, to live close to his son. The car arived in 1988 and due to the fact that we are right hand drive, entered its life on the roads of New Zealand with out any fuss. He Drove it for 5 years. The old boys health then began to decline and the BMW was placed on Jack stands, the wheels placed in a pile the door was closed.
He Sadly died in 2003. His Son then gave it to his daughter for her 1st car.
In the time the grand daughter had the car (2003-2006) a total of about $9500.00.nzd was spent
Here is what was performed in that time.
Fully rebuilt head,
Rebult Carb
All belts and tensioners
Power stearing fitted all refurbished parts,
Complete brake rebuild, all new lines, every thing replaced or reconditioned,
rebulit front lower arms,
new tyres
pioneer stero
and i think thats all.
In this time the car covered, according to the mialage on the invoices for the work performed, only about 6,000 miles.
She then crashed it.
A panel shop Quoted $3000.00 To repair the damage.
Due to the money already spent and the cost of repair. it was put on the net for sale for some one to strip. I bid and i won.
My bid was $455.00
I found a crazy chinese woman with a couple of these as parts and got a radatior and front valance for $200.00. its going to the panel beater in a week to get the damage repaired. I was quoted $750.00 to finish her off from my mates boss.
so all up she is going to cost me only $1400.00nzd
The car
1982 320/6
86,xxx miles
13inch alloys
Pioneer Mp3/cd
Dark grey cloth interior
Wiper blades on headlights
2.0l m20
5 speed
And of course its english
opalgrun-met. paint (light greenish)
I have big plans for this little beauty
I have a set of B&G springs (40mm drop) (made in belgum) arriving tomorrow.
I also have a set of BBS 15X6.5 wheels and tyres on the way.
Some colour coding on a few things.Wait and find out
Am looking for pictures of strut braces as am going to create my own. F&R
Move the bat. to the boot (trunk)
Urathane bushes all round,
Headers and exhaust system
Find an aftermarket front bumper
Using the stero in the car (its worth more than i payed for the car)
Wack in my 6X9, 6inch components, 12" sub and 600w amp.
fit my nice fat SAAS racing wheel
find some sports style seats (im thinking nissan recaro style seats)
A brake upgrade( i think i found some Gearling 4pots today)
Then as a final thing would be a 325i e30 swap.
The dream is to paint her black with a gold flake, gold pin striping, and gold center BBS basket weaves. Just like a John Player Special.
Bring on the hill sprints and track days i say.
Brock

nh320i 08-27-2006, 11:06 AM ok, I purchased my 1982 320is about a month ago. It has 96,000 on it. Never driven in snow, which is amazing for New England! When I bought it from the original owner it had been stored in a garage for years and had fuel line and clutch issues. The car is pretty much spotless. The color is Henerot with black interior. The car is rust free and original execpt for the radio,(and the front brakes that I just changed).
So far I have done the following:
Volvo Girling big brake upgrade with slotted, vented, and cross drilled rotors
rear wheel cylinder ( the cause of the clutch issues, the fluid was low due to leak)
had the paint buffed
replaced rear dif gasket that was leaking
replaced valve cover gasket that was leaking
tune up
changed all fluids
new fog light lenses due to pitting and a broken lense
I am doing some research on the idle fluctuation during cold start (the Bosch book is not the fastest read)
To be done:
struts, it is a little loose for me
I am having trouble doing too much to this car as it is so mint and original, perhaps too nice for me. Maybe I need to sell this and get a car a little less perfect...
Kevin E21 09-18-2006, 02:19 AM My name is Kevin. I just bought a 1978 320i about 12 hours ago.
It 102,000 miles, black vinyl recaros, some extra trim was added by the first owner, other than that it is pretty much stock.
My plans as of right now are to fix up the minor rust issues, and other various quirks. The headlights aren't working correctly, my guages don't light up, my wipers are stuck in the verticle position, and some of the trim needs to be removed/fixed. The extra trim added by the original owner will be removed.
Eventually, I'll do some upgraded suspension, brakes, and wheels. Then maybe some euro bumpers, and some small engine mods/exhaust.
For right now, it's going to stay stock until I fix the little annoying things.
sonomaGTLN2 09-21-2006, 08:06 PM Hey my name is Adam, but I usually use AJ for my forum name.
Specs:
I have a 1983 320i, M10 5spd. I got it August 2006 for $450, and the odometer says 95k miles. Rides real nice, but does need some work on the motor and new shifter bushings. Radio and sound system was stripped out before i got the car, so I am gutting the entire interior and patching holes in the front corners of floorpan.
Plans:
Strip out interior (done)
Patch floorboard holes, riveting in galvanized steel panels (done)
Remove bumpers (front done, rear still on)
Seal floorboard with bedliner spray
Relocate battery
Remove A/C and Heater
Suspension work...swaybars, H&R springs (most likely), Bilstein shocks
Looking for IS rear gearbox...or LSD for that matter.
Get motor running perfect
Refresh brakes and brake lines
BIG Plans:
Turbo current motor after rebuild (OR)
Find an M10 E30 motor or M20 and fit it in if stock motor doesnt work, then turbo.
This forum has already proved to be a valuable resource, im so glad people here are helpful. When i can post pictures, i'll be putting some up!

cheechthechi 09-30-2006, 04:40 AM Hi I'm Chandana Edirisinghe, or cheechthechi.
I have a mostly stock 1981 alpine white 320i. Only "mod" I have done so far are blackened out 320is wheels, evertyhting else is stock. I don't plan to really do any work on it right now until I finish up the 2002, but once I do most probably:
m42 conversion with either custom chipped ecu or megasquirt
Euro bumpers
14-15" wheels (bbs most likely)
Redo the paint
HID lighting
motorsport valence with 2002 turbo flares?
and whatever else I think of
BaronOfIpanema 10-09-2006, 05:16 PM Well, I found a nice, rust-free e21 with an unusual color, bronzitbeige, to add to the stable. She's an '83 is with a host of prior work done to her - she's got '77 vented discs upfront, Bilstein HD's, Copper-core radiator (think it's off an '02? early e21?), Hartge stress bar, e21 parts control arms w/urethane bushings, extended-duration thermo-time switch, low-temp thermostats, new fuel hard lines, cool 205 white-wall BF Goodrich T/A's (have to turn them around, though), Ansa muffler, Optima battery, and rebuilt brake drums.
I'm psyched, considering the old henna's rust problems.
Here are some shots of the arrival - couldn't get plates today on account of the holiday:mad .

The seller also threw in a few extra parts and goodies:cool , including a spare set of 80's Konig sport seats, front and rear, a Foha spoiler, and 6 extra basketweeves - 2 gold color, a 3.64 diff, and a Metric Mechanic short-shift kit.:redspot
Some of these I will sell and will discuss in another thread after I've taken pics.
BaronOfIpanema 10-09-2006, 05:19 PM Oh, yeah, it also has working A/C!!
e21gangsta 10-20-2006, 07:31 PM hey guys newbie to the site.

rjk3rd320is 10-31-2006, 02:09 AM hey my names bobby im 18. i have a 82 320is with a little under 70,000 original miles.
the cars been in my family for about 5 years, my dad bought it off of his friend whos owned it since it was new, never drove it in the rain, snow, just kept it shiny in his garage. its white (i think alpina white) with red pinstriping down the side. 5 sp manual transmission. black interior, black leather recaros. bbs front air damn and wheels. the only upgrades are to the air filter, and the ignition coils. it was my second car, ive driven it for about 2 years now, i got it into a few accidents, tough to learn stick with rear wheel drive in the winter time i guess lol. needs a new bumper, front fenders, and some minor touch up work. i also hit a deer which screwed up my whole grill, bent the hell out of the metal middle piece, and also cracked the left grille (not extremely noticable though) and blew out my fog light.
future mods:
lowering springs, new suspension
side skirts, rear apron, and a spoiler
full exhaust- headers, center pipe, downpipe, muffler
smoked lights all around
a possible new paintjob or pinstripes
new brakes- im thinkin either stoptech or bavarian autosport. anythings better than what i got.
any suggestions where to find parts for cheap?
i'll post pictures as soon as i can

stevec. 11-27-2006, 02:00 PM Hello, I'm new to bmw's as well as to forums (and somewhat to cars too). Seems like you guys have a great community here. Looking forward to getting involved more. Here goes...
1983 MT 320i Schwarz
150k miles
Purchased 10/06 from a kid who's going into the army. The car had two owners before him. Good condition besides the exhaust(which is hanging on my garage floor) and the brakes (and the shifter, and the heater fan, and...).
Mods: I'll get back to you on this when I learn more
Future plans: I need help in this area. I'm not really looking to track this car (at least yet), yet it won't really be a DD. I'm looking to go cruising to cafes on the weekends with my wife. I'd like to make it more sporty and fun to drive (as if it weren't already), while maintaining the original charisma of the e21.
replace the exhaust, brakes, shifter, lose the chrome bumpers, etc.
Again, I could really use some suggestions on a plan for this car. Right now I really need to do the exhaust(now) and I'm debating the following:
headers? I understand that we have a great stock manifold. will custom headers make a big difference?
best flow muffler that you've found?
to turbo or to go M20 in the future?
Thanks for reading...I'll learn to post better in the future.
blitzed310 11-27-2006, 02:19 PM Hey Steve welcome to the forums. I would suggest you make a seperate thread regarding your questions so you will have more responses and you can track them better.

bugzrrad 12-13-2006, 12:07 AM I have a 1982 BMW 323i. It is a greenish-blue color. I just bought it on Sunday (12/10/06) for $300 and drove it home. It has about 230k miles on the clock with a rebuilt motor as of about a year ago. It has a limited slip differential (do all imports have this?) and power mirrors (they don't work). It is fun to drive.

Kevin E21 01-27-2007, 03:14 AM Welcome Tom! There is not a whole lot of aftermarket support for our cars. I would definately look around and see what other members have done though, so you can get some ideas. I would do euro bumpers, wheels, and suspension first.
thatlile21 01-27-2007, 04:50 AM right now i was just going for maybe an intake and maybe an exhaust system.this is my first BMW.i've had two porsche 944's and sofar i think this car is 10 times better.it's already 260 a month for insurance so i'm sticking with some modest mods for now.

Madhatter 02-03-2007, 06:44 PM Sydney. the car used to have the matching gold pin stripe too, but it was removed by the previous owner. Has the recaro interior, sunroof, motorsport front spoiler, etc, its missing the steering wheel though. Hopefully if all goes smoothly ill have it next weekend :D

The good:
- motor feels good even at 300k km
- gearbox feels good, changes smoothly, no weird noises
- recaro interior
- 15 x 7" BBS wheels
- motorsport spoiler
- been lowered
- original sport steering wheel (the 3 spoke one)
- omg! working, non leaking, rust free, electric sunroof!
- under dash trim panels are there, never seen them complete on any e21 here :embarrasm
Edit: Forgot, virtually crack free dash! only one small one starting to open up now. :)
The bad:
- a bit of rust in areas they usually dont rust in :confused
- oversized tyres, front rubs on the guard every bump you hit
- webbing in recaro's has gone (easily fixed though)
- damage to front spoiler and bonnet
- shifter bushes toast
- missing gold pin stripes
Need to spend a little money on it to get it looking clean again, plus do some maintenance like timing belt, new hoses, etc, bonnet is probably junk, so might need to get a new one resprayed. But, for the $1500 it cost, not a bad buy :redspot
Ill give it a good clean and detail over the weekend then take some decent pics :cool

yeah, i guess it isnt too bad. To drive it, it feels a little unsure, like there is movement somewhere, so ill replace all the bushes and see if it tightens up a bit. It also has a bit of rust and the runroof is a little damp, but i guess its nothing that cant be sorted.
Yeah, i can get you some tomorrow, its basically a 2 button switch, if you hold down the closed button once its closed, it opens the back of the sunroof up (for ventilation, ala e30). The more i look at it, the more it looks like its been aftermarket, not an original bmw fitment when it was produced. The switch is installed off to one side of the roof liner, which is kinda weird, might be because of the motor position or something though.
Edit: Ohh, how cool is this, i was digging around in the car and i found the original purchase papers from a dealer (nissan dealer of all things). Was $20,500 and was purchased in 1985 (so maybe the dealer had it for awhile, or maybe it was a trade in or something). Even lists it as a jps on the info, so chances are its real :)

Excuse the dirty vinyl :blush2
blitzed310 02-16-2007, 04:37 AM I was looking to see the profile of the headliner with the motor installed. Basically I want to see if it makes a bulge. I would have to make a cardboard surround for the motor to blend it in with the rest of the headliner. Thanks for the pic.
Madhatter 02-16-2007, 04:42 AM Yeah it does buldge, the headliner has sagged a bit which is why it doesnt give a good fit around the switch, but yeah, the motor is a pretty hefty unit. Just manages to fit in the space between the sun visors.
On a lesser note, but a poor pic due to the rainy, dismal weather here;
http://www.rd-motorsport.net/images/stories/fun%20stuff/JPS/registered.jpg
got registered :)
Ordered some 195/55, 205/50 Toyo T1R's for it today, should arrive on monday, fit them up tuesday when at work (perks of running a tyre store). Should help with grip levels and sort out the rubbing issue on the front :woot: Im thinking maybe this weekend ill polish up the wheels and get them all nice and clean for new rubber, they have a fair bit of dish so it should look good with polished lips.
We (got a sparky friend with a workshop across the carpark from our store) had a look at the AC today and it appears everything is good, just needs gas. So once i get the bonnet repaired so it opens without catching on the grill, ill get it gassed up and see if it holds pressure. :)

Clio320i 03-23-2007, 05:55 PM Hi all. I'm new here, so this seems a good place to start.
My car is a stock 1980 320i, Cypressengrun with the most excellent gold pinstripe.
Odometer says 162000 but it hasn't worked in about three years, so my guess is 180ish.
This is hands-down my favorite car I've ever had. I came to BMW ownership from Volvo and before that, VW (I was into the vintage buses).
I've had this one for 6 years. She's had many of the typical 320i issues, but overall has been very reliable as a daily driver - for the most part the car runs as good now as 6 years ago. She loves trips to Seattle (yay! freeway!), cool weather (like Germany), and high-test fuel.
I have only ever seen one other in this color. Anyone here got one?

-37,602 on the odo.
-Car has a tiny amount of rust in the trunk (spare tire well) and 2 tiny (1/4") spots on the bodywork from door dings. The rest of the car is pretty much mint, other than just being dusty from sitting.
-Car doesnt run, P/0 said the fuel pump was bad. Havent had a chance to check it out. To be honest I didnt even care the car didnt run as it was so clean.
Over the next few months Im going to be documenting the progress of bringing this old car back up to scratch!

elias11 03-28-2007, 07:37 AM Hey Madhatter, what size are the wheels on the JPS? Are they genuine BBS? Really nice car btw, love the JPS special cars.
Madhatter 03-28-2007, 08:22 AM 15x7.
Yes indeed they are. Im about to restore them soon, i just purchased a new tv, so next week when im paid im going to pull them off the car 2 at a time and restore them.
Thanks, cant say ive done anything to it though, other than suspension mods, most of it comes as standard. Im going to fix it up though, ive got a new bonnet which i have to get resprayed when i recover some funds from the last couple of purchases (purchased a new dslr camera a couple weeks ago too). Going to have that done and the car cut and polished, then have the gold pin stripes put back on the car, should look pretty sweet then.
Ive got the plates for it too :)

e21bimmer320i 04-03-2007, 01:29 PM Hi, my name is Nick. I have owned my 1978 320i for approx. 2 years. I bought it from a German couple in Novato, California through my grandfather, who lives nearby there. It almost has 100,000 miles.
Upgrades:
Tinted Windows
K&N air filter
All of these are new I added on: BMW battery, ingintion coil, spark plugs, ignition wires, battery cables, radiator, washer fluid reservoir
Clear Euro corner lights with silver "stealth" bulbs inside
"BMW" lisence plate frames
New BMW hood badges (the others were cracked and faded)
Bosch bracketless Icon wiper blades (for a more european look)
Dash cover (front and rear)
Leather steering wheel cover (which I threaded myself during the summer while sitting in a 100 degree plus car, with the A/C on of course)
Black mats with 320i embroidery
wazhi 04-03-2007, 06:17 PM Hey guys, I'm Chad. I just got my first e21 last week. I've owed many classic VW's but wanted to try something that was rear wheel drive, a classic, and a bit more sofisticated.
I got a black 83 320i. The PO put the IS interior, 13" bbs meshies, IS front spoiler etc. and took pretty good care of the car from what I can tell so far. The front recaro's arent in great shape and a few small issues with the dash, one of the front struts is totally gone but overal its a clean e21 and a BLAST to drive! :) I'm already extremely happy with my decision. :)
I used the old clay bar and waxed the car this past weekend. I'm going to snap a few pics today hopefully and post some pics tomorrow. Great to meet everyone!
Here's a pic I took on the way home from work yesterday...

bensmall 04-18-2007, 02:19 AM Hi Guys
My name is Ben, i'm from Sydney Australia. I've been on the forums for a little while but haven't registered cause my car hasnt been finished! However I picker her up from the mechanic yesterday and drove her for the first time! She did very well considering the 5 odd years she sat. Its mostly stock apart from a re-spray from Silver to Pacific Blue and Bilstein Shocks. I hope to do more slowly. The odometer only reads 101,804 kms.
I'll post some picks in "Post Random Pix of you E21" thread once I have some good new ones as well as how she looked when I bought her.
Thanks for having me on Bimmer forums I really enjoy all the info and discussions here. :)
Ben
Darth Bimmer 06-05-2007, 10:11 AM Hello All, I just picked up a 320i to replace my Volvo 940 Turbo (hydroplaning accident). Here are the stats:
1983 320i
220,000 miles
5 speed
I purchased the car from the original owner, garage kept, all BMW service.
Black, grey interior with cloth Recaros.
Air Dam, Fog Lights, BBS style 13" wheels, LSD, Sunroof, Leather 3 spoke steering wheel, leather shift knob. Original AM/FM/Cass (works! as do all the original speakers!)
The engine runs tight as a tick! No oil use at all after putting 4000 miles on the car. No leaks visible, no fuel management issues.
Things that don't work:
Sunroof crank missing and I suspect a total sunroof rebuild is in order.
Power side mirrors don't operate. Emergency flasher and rear defroster switches not working.
Fog lights - I suspect the relay.
Fuel guage on R. Bad sending unit?
Needs:
Front end rebuild, wicked shimmy at 40-55 mph.
Very sloppy shifter, inner and outer shift boots in bad shape too.
Could use a new muffler.
Need to remove aftermarket cruise control and trailer light wiring harness. They seem to be causing some electrical gremlins. Also removing the class II trailer hitch that is on the car!
Body is decent, has no rust and only some minor dents on the left fender and right door. The original paint is is pretty good shape. According to the original owner, the only respray was the hood at about 140,000.
This is my first classic BMW experience, wish me luck! I'm going in!
Wreckanic 06-15-2007, 10:32 PM This seems to be the spot for intros so...
Hello,
My name is Tim. I've owned a 1980 323i for roughly a year and a half. In that time I've managed to reduce a fairly respectable, honest, car into an oil guzzling, cancer riddled bomb with a bad case of the shakes. To my eternal shame this is not the first car I've done this to but I've fallen hard enough for the Beemer that this time I'm determined to do right by it.
Hence my joining up here. I'm going to pick your brains mercilessly as I attempt to restore some dignity to the poor old car. The search feature of this forum has already yeilded some useful info but there is still much I have to learn.
hdriven 06-18-2007, 05:17 PM Ok guys here is my e21, it is a 78 320i, i have owned it for just around 5 months. It has 90k original miles on it, i repainted it my self in my back yard a nice "sapphire blue effect" it has bilstein suspension, and it has 15 inch BBS rims that are staggered. The body has absolutely no rust and or cancer. The engine was overhauled by me (once again), i added a few pieces to make it look better (in my opinion) those pieces are: the front lip, the custom fog lights, a wing in the back, and i welded in a 4 point strut brace in the back as well as in the front. Some future mods are JIC magic, or HKS coil overs, an sr20det engine swap, and some nice seats to keep me planted. Oh and brake upgrades also.
Typop320is 06-20-2007, 04:12 AM ok so..... im new to this site, i thought it would be a great way to come up with some ideas of what motor to put into my E21 instead of my really great M10!!!
Heres my ride!
1981 320is
Mods:
Pine tree air freshener and door hanging cup holder! (Sporty)
Features:
LSD Diff
Ricaro Seats
Black interior (Imaculate!)

Wheels/Tires
Audio upgrade

small bits of rust removal
battery relocation
clutch upgrade
Current stats:

My future plans are to get in running. I am in the process of a tune up, fluid change, new bushings, brake lines and shocks. From there it will be the brakes once I dirve it.

I picked it up this past spring and have been working on it ever since on my off time.
I've done some floor welding and now am renewing the cyl. head.

gabmwdrvr 09-14-2007, 01:36 PM Hi, new to this forum since I bought my E21 last week. So far I am loving the car and visiting the u-pull-it for spare/replacement parts:
1982 E21 320i
Henna red
224k miles
5 speed manual
Alpina style BMW wheels
Tan cloth interior
Car is all original
Everything I have checked so far works. The only problems were a broken hazzard button (still broken) and the glove box latch (found a replacement at the junker). The seats are cloth and completely dry rotted.
I have searched the car and have found absolutely no rust. There is a small leak on both sides of the trunk that I think is coming from the tail light assembly. Will need new lenses (cracked) and gasket.
I will post pictures as soon as I have enough posts. You can go to e90post/forums under picture gallery and see it on under "my new 3 series" thread.
Mark I 09-16-2007, 09:45 PM I found my way over here after bmw320i.com went down. I have a 79 320i that is mostly stock. When it's together and running, it's my daily driver.
the basics
140K miles
never A/C
near mint interior, with just a few small dash cracks
Sport steering wheel
repainted 10 years ago, doesn't appear to be a BMW color now
complete records from original owner (first 135K miles)
Due to a coolant leak, I currently have the head removed and am getting a valve job done at the same time. (Sending out the valve work, doing the rest myself.) I imagine I'll create a thread as I have questions related to this project.
Here's a pic I didn't take, but is of my car when I bought it.

320 bimmer 09-23-2007, 02:15 AM this is my e21 320is. wooo k well, first off, its got 246,000 miles on it, 160ish on a 1.8l engine put in in 84, 5 spd, lsd, old style 15" BBS wheels, two 8" subs in the back (previous owner put them in). so far only modeification is removing the front bumper, im gonna cover the holes and leave it looking that good! future plans involve putting a euro bumper on the back, replacing the side trim, hopefully some euro kits, rebuild or get a rebuilt engine and rebuild the current with a turbo, and then replace the seats. original paint (to my knowledge) and have the A/C but doesn't work, gonna pull it out (leave the heater though). oh and NO RUST! true california car
my bad about the picture quality, im guessing that with the more posts i have the better images i can put up (small files bad pixalation).
gabmwdrvr 09-23-2007, 04:54 PM 320 Bimmer, your car looks great. I really like how the BBS wheels look.
320 bimmer 09-23-2007, 05:10 PM yeah, me too, it was a steel too, below 2k for it, iwas happy when i found it. i had seen hill climbs of these cars and wanted one bad, now i have one haha. but yeah, it was an amazing find.
ricky320i 09-25-2007, 02:45 PM i just got a 320i about 3 weeks ago. i just got it running a few days ago, i really thought it was a basket case when i noticed 2 freeze plugs laying down below there block holes. but i stuck a couple rubber temporary plugs in and it held water, so i continued working on engine, replaced some hoses and fuel inj. boot, and it fired up, no water in oil, no smoke, what a suprise. now i am trying to learn the fuel inj. system. i love the car, it has perfect tan leather interior, red paint 1.8l w/5 speed. i got it idling ok, just having problems with cold starts. i found a sensor on the front motor pulling bracket, that shows open circuit and when i jump it closed engine starts right up. but im not sure what it is. i could use any help getting this fuel inj. and emmissions set-up. thanks, and hello everyone.

It is my third e21 (and newest) bought in Alberta Canada, so the body is still very sound but a little weathered from neglect. after basic repairs, I treated her to a set of Bilstiens and H&R's and changed the terrible drivers seat with a toyota passeo donor...man i love these cars!!

History
I purchased vehicle in 1981 with 3,000 on the clock. It was my daily driver until 7 years ago. The car has now has 97k miles and is driven on the weekends. I moved to Fresno from the San Francisco about 15 years ago and the car has never done well in the Valley heat, so this is the time of the year where I take it out more often.
I have driven the car for 25+ years and it still brings a smile to my face when I get out on some back roads. The wife wants me to get rid of it, but I don't have the heart. Plus you do not see too many e21's on the road these days and people always stop me to comment how much they like the car.
It needs fresh paint, and a few tweeks as always.
Reading this forum and looking at some fine pictures of everyones 320's has got me excited to start working on the car again.
I have a lot of extra parts left to install and some that I will look to sell down the road.
Thanks
Anton
MrBuddhaDude 10-24-2007, 08:58 PM I picked up my e21 about a month ago and have since been become a bimmerforum addict just looking for information and spare parts. My 1980 320i has been a Northern California car all its life and I'm the third owner. The first owner took really good care of it with the car being kept very original. He even kept all of the documentation going back to the original invoice and the shipping papers from Germany...sounds kinda corny, but I felt like I was looking at a birth certificate when I was going through the paperwork. :D
Anyhow, here's the rundown:
1980 320i
173K on original motor and tranny
Alpine White very clean
Tan interior all stock and clean
Stock wheels with fresh tires
New Ansa exhaust (Bonus! I found this out after I drove the car home!)
Bavarian Auto springs (Bonus! I found this out after I drove the car home!)
In the past month, I've already been able to amass the following parts via Craigslist, eBay, BimmerForums.com and BayE30.net...hehe...
- Old school BBS RZ's...just waiting for spacers to come in
- Ground Control front strut tower bar
- Home-made rear aluminum strut tower bar
- Ken Danielson-made front control arm Alpina brace
- Rear sway bar w/ poly end links from 1977 IS donor car
- Radiator w/ electric fan (mine's already busted...)
- e30 IS trunk lid spoiler
- no-name shifter and steering wheel (left over from my old 1970 521 Datsun pickup)
I really just want to get her handling really nice and use her as my daily driver...the e21 community has been awesome and I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun owning this car.
Cheers!
-Eric

I've been hangin' around this site, and just soaking up all of the info and assorted B.S. from the whole lot of you, for the past year or so. You guys all have some very nice machinery, and if not for your combined experiences I'd have gotten stuck with little progress to my 323 long ago.
Since I'm a computer retard, I needed help posting pics/attachments, so forgive me if any of this is a repost.
my 323 was unloaded in Baltimore in 1996, and then sat, unregistered and illegal for more than 3 years while the P.O. got all of the DOT/Epa papers together. Water got into the trunk, and past the windshield seals, and combined with a leaky sunroof, the car must have rusted off about 50 pounds of sheetmetal. We replaced the 50 pounds of sheet metal and then removed another 100 or so pounds of weight from the trunk, the sound deadening, the heavy horse hair and spring seats, and among other things, the sunroof and assorted hardware.
we added:
Corbeau buckets and modified brackets
15x7 Konig Maxxim Screech wheels ( heavy crap )
e30 "is" tail
MOMO Prototipo steering wheel
H&R sports
Bilstein Sports-front struts are e30 sports
Unfortunately, all of the sitting that the car has endured has taken it's toll. The engine smokes LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN, and the calipers are really "grabby"-even after two bleeds. Looks like I have some upgrades to consider for the winter break.

Catstoy 12-10-2007, 06:42 PM Hello All,
I'm the proud owner of a 1981 320i. I bought it from my neighbor a couple of years back for a cool grand. I was looking for something to spend some deployment pay on and figured what the heck. I drove it for a while and found a few little problems (driver floorboard rusted out, water leaking in the glove box, that sort of thing). I am in the process of fixing the old girl up because my wife loves that old car smell, but G.W.Bush has been keeping me busy putting out fires in Iraq and what not so it is slow going. At some point someone tried to turn it into a rally car so it has all kinds of little toys in it (anti-sway bars, short throw shifter, upgraded brakes, ignition all that good stuff). I'm still trying to figure out all that was done to it so I can see where I stand in my rebuild. I have tons of questions and will probably make a pest of myself after a while.
Catstoy 12-10-2007, 06:44 PM Can't wait to put some pix up at some point. I may try to post some of the in process pix as well.

I am currently in the process of building a 2.2 hi comp, cammed engine to install, hopefully neighborhood of 150 horse. I also have some 15" Alpina knockoffs in the garage, but I kinda almost like the old schoool meaty 13" look. Just too hard to find a performance 13" tire anymore.--dennis
Red Ribbon Army 12-19-2007, 10:44 PM looks good, euro bumpers would make it sex

Nope, They're Shelbys. Brand name CSS. Carroll Shelby and I believe Boyd Coddington(sp?) had a joint venture in the '80s making wheels. This is the second e21 That I have owned to have them. I modified BMW motorsport centers to fit them. The silver set were on my Century Turbo, and the graphite set are on my iS. Both are 13x6 with a VERY shallow offset, less than 10mm, so they set right at the edge of the wheel well for a very beefy look without being skateboarded.

I know a guy with a mid 70's (?) Capri with these wheel on it. Shelby was into all sorts of things. He is a business man and once his name goes on something, it sells well.
320 bimmer 12-22-2007, 09:57 PM very true. i guess they are kinda rare then. i've never heard of them myself.
looking at getting a cobra kit though.... :D
the wheels do look good though.
braol 01-02-2008, 11:09 PM Early 1979 320i. Mint interior with NO cracks in the dash. Engine is bone stock, but it runs great. 98% rust free, small hole in driver's side floor. Foglamps inop.
Mods: None
Fixed: Heater blower motor, E-brake adjusted, thermostat and hoses
Upgrade Plans:
Engine: e30 alternator swap, move battery to rear, electric radiator fan, engine mounts, lose the airpump, I'd like to get the head refreshed in the future but it runs fine now
Exterior: Avus Blau or Polaris Silver respray, front bumper brackets
Suspension: 1977 vented front disc swap, replace rubber mounts, keep stock rear drums, front and rear strut braces
Interior: clean headliner, install CD player from last car (1991 GTI)
I enjoy the car stock as it reminds me of my first car: 1983 320i. The '83 did seem faster but that was 20 years ago....
montesilvia 01-03-2008, 12:20 AM hi, im situated in Australia and recently purchased an '82 323i.
its brought me many headaches but i keep trying coz i really wana drive it again.
saphir blau metallic
lowered
rare front bar
bucket seats
racing steering wheel
BBS 15s
its in bad condition cosmeticaly but thats the least of my problems. im gonna fix da rust, paint it into matt black, fit an OEM twin pipe exhaust and cosmetics are done.
my issue is the mechanicals. the previous owner destroyed the CO level screw and i cant get it. BMW wont sell it without the distributor, and they want $4000 (trAde price)
the wreckers in this town dont have s--t. so im searching the net for this screw and it seems possible but i havent found it yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated and i will keep yous updated.
extra chrispy 01-10-2008, 10:13 PM '81 320i(s) 230,xxx miles. Bought on Ebay in December of 2007 for $800. Does not run. I think it may be a true S car but the PO told me his son was turning it into an S, so I am unsure. I have yet to get it off the ground for a better view of the diff. It does not have a tag so the easy tell is not there. Everything else seems to indicate the S package. I'm debating what to do with it since originally I planned to strip it for racing in either SCCA Solo Mod or Prepared. Now I'm thinking FSP and retaining as much of it as possible. It appears stock with the exception of possible lowered springs, judging from photos and the few other 320s I've seen. Of course comments are always welcome.

AhrimaaN 01-20-2008, 10:26 AM 1983 323i E21, Bergundy, Aussie delivered.
Probably the doggiest E21 on this forum if I bothered to post pics, yet I still love it. The paint is an utter mess, peeling off everywhere... yet still manages to have no rust. Dash is cracked to dabillio, I hold up my glove box with an umbrella as the latch is busted (haha), my hazard and demister switches are gone but are rigged to work as of now, the gear knob has lost the plastic label on it, some of the tools are missing from the rear, the leftovers are looking pretty messy. It also has a fair few dents in it's body from various things. The left turn indicator doesn't return at all, while the right side does it when it feels like (maybe 50% of the time haha). It's fitted with stock radials (13'' i think lol).
It's been in my family for about 14 years now and still drives fairly well - geez does it love travelling on the highway. It still doesn't rattle or feel like a lot of crap 10 year newer jap cars I've been in.
I've replaced the rear seats, changed the head, mucked around with the fuel pump and various cooling issues and that's about it.. oh new higher capacity battery and of course new stereo and an alarm/disabler (hence the glovebox being held up so as not to set it off - that's where the stacker is).
Once I get a bit more money a total refurbishment is on the cards, perhaps even a whole new motor (or perhaps I should start afresh on another E21?!?!?)
Things I really want to do:
Totally gut and redo the interior
Engine rebuild/replacement
Clear Signals
Body Kit
BBS Rims
Total respray in silver.
