I'm selling my E36 next week and trying to decide on my next car. It must be AWD, because it will be Daily even in Michigan winter, Yet still be tunible, and fun to drive. I'm leaning towards the B5 S4, because i think it would be fun and different to modify with the twin turbos, yet still could be daily in winter snow. But this is the bimmer forum, and I love the look of E46's and love the way the drive and handle. Reasons why 330xi>Audi B5 S4?

Honestly the S4 imo is the better vehicle.

I don't like xi bmw's. Audi is the best at that. When you talk about the b5 s4, you are talking about a serious car. It can be tuned to over 500hp easily. Out of the box, the car is really fast. With a software tune, it's over 300hp. The quattro is also a big plus, especially if you are going to be needing it in the winter.

^Right. Thats what i thought too. I love E46's, but not Xi's, and RWD is just not an option for year round daily.

Yes, the B5 S4 has tons of potential and Quattro is great.

Just make sure that you buy one with lower mileage and that it has all the service records.
I would also recommend buying a stock b5 s4.

I'm currently looking @ a 2001 w/ 15,000 miles! Silver/ black leather / 6sp.

WOW. That is very LOW mileage.

Send me a link. I remember a car like this a while ago for sale that had a salvage title. Just to make sure it's not the same one.

S4 and 330 is also an unfair comparson, as I would think the s4 is more on the M level.

So...... B5 S4 is on M3 level or close to, 10k less(respectivly), and can be driven all year (AWD). How can you do any better? Or am i missing something?

the biggest thing you need to worry abt with the b5 is the turbos. a lot of pple beat those cars, and if they aren't properly cared for, the turbo's can go pretty quick. thats a pretty serious repair bill to get...

Personally, I do like my XI and have driven S4's, which are great in their own right. However, if you are looking to tune your car, get the S4. If you are not looking to touch the engine, get the XI. When I started looking at cars, S4's were my first choice, but a friend steered me to a XI just because BMW has better service (maintenance wise).

If you do decide with a S4, go with a 2002 or newer. 2001's have small oil supply lines that would sometimes starve the turbos of lubrication, causing them to fail, which was fixed the next model year.

the S4 is a lot faster than the xi, and personally i think that audi did a much better job on the awd system then bmw. as said before, the s4 is also much more amenable to tuning.
