View Full Version : im looking for a job
SergeK 08-21-2007, 06:17 AM Yep. Since i quit the strip club ive been having trouble finding a job, not that ive been looking very hard at all... but its time to stop boondoggin around.
Im looking for anything from the West Palm Beach area down to Ft Lauderdale.
Im great with computers. Ive built them, repaired them, cleaned off spyware, upgraded, whatever. I can do pretty much anything.
I love music. I play semi-professionally as a drummer and have extensive studio experience. I am very well versed in ProTools, Cubase, and other recording programs. I am very knowledgeable with equipment and setting up studios.
I have worked Security jobs for the past three years. Worked as a bouncer in many of the hottest clubs in south Florida. Although i am trying to get out of the security business, if the money is right ill make exceptions. Ive done bodyguarding, event security, club security and private property security.
I am looking to get into more of an Office or Corporate setting. Maybe as a computer Technician. I have a flawless criminal record, and have no moving violations. I am looking to make Atleast 12$ an hour or about 500-700 a week.
hooRAH 08-21-2007, 11:15 AM Serge,
While I don't have any leads for you to become a computer tech, I can offer these two bits of advice:
I know of a few people that thought doing Geek squad services at Best Buy was a good way to get their foot in the door to the computer tech industry, and they were usually disappointed because it really didn't offer them anything and working there made it difficult to apply for other jobs. Not saying its a bad thing to work there, just be careful before you take that route.
The other thing I found when I was looking for summer jobs is that apparently theres a good demand for service valets at car dealerships, and the one at Schumacer that I applied at offered me $11 an hour. Their biggest concern was that I was actually going to show up and not do drugs on the job. I was certainly not aware that you could make $11 an hour for showing up sober, seems a little over the top to me, but hey, business is business. They ended up not hiring me because I let it slip that I was going back to school, but if you're good for 40 a week, Im sure you can pick up something thats at least a decent job.
As a bonus, most dealerships are open long hours, so if you work say a 10-6 shift, it leaves you 2 hours in the morning to interview with other companies.
Good luck with it, I'll let you know if I see anything pop up!

it is kind of like a myspace for professionals...you can find a lot of people to network with and find jobs posted by actual companies/individuals
for 12/hr
tech support jobs are real good for that... you can sometimes make more and if you really enjoy it ... you can eventually be making 60k or so in a few years
pbclax423 08-21-2007, 07:01 PM i might have something you could take my job since im going to school. I was an IT tech at peninsula bank in delray beach. my boss is looking for someone to replace me and if i give him a reccomendation its like 70% you got the job the other 30% is up to you.
working around 25-30 hrs a week, getting paid on the 15th and 30/31st i was getting anywheres from 500-700 a paycheck. im sure if you put in full time, youd be making close to 2500-3000 a month
SergeK 08-22-2007, 12:58 AM Hmmm, how hard is said job? I dont ahve any certifications in IT or anything... but i know my way around? What entails a standard day?

standard day ---
recieveing phone calls from fellow employees who lock themselves out of programs due to forgetting password.
re-building and re-imaging computers
long lunch.
remote connecting into computers in order to fix said problems described by employees.....
its fairly easy. you just need to learn the programs. Navigator, deposit pro, icheck, ezteller, superview.
SergeK 08-22-2007, 03:50 AM Hmmm. Sounds like right up my ally. Where do we go from here?
nonphixion 09-03-2007, 11:02 AM Get some low level certs to get started in IT. We are pretty desperate for people right now, but you need to have at least some experience in networking to get considered...
Raven Fox 09-03-2007, 01:32 PM You can start IT at Univ - they are always short handed!
As for valet I looked into that 2 summers ago - they were paying 10 - 20 down here on my block at the condos and hotels - and you get to move around a bunch of bentleys! Tips at 4 seasons and conrad as per the employees were good - atleast $5 per car would be customary since no parking lot is under the hotel's rate anyways.
I didn't get the job because I told the guy in theory I can drive stick but I am not sure about if I really can. He looked at me like I was crazy :)
By theory i mean GT the game and sports shift on the bmw count as practice right? right!?
hooRAH 09-04-2007, 12:35 PM Well Valet parking is a bit different from a service valet at a dealership.
I'm beginning to date myself here, but I did Valet parking a few years ago, so I can let you know some stuff about it. First, I doubt that you will average $5 per car, (maybe at the breakers), but the tips wont be bad. I averaged about $3.50 per car (most gave 2 or 3, and we had a few really good tippers), and I did much better than my friends that worked at cityplace.
If you work with 2 other valets, you don't need to know how to drive a stick. If you work a lunch shift by yourself you better be able to. On average, if we parked 50 cars in a night, 3 or 4 would be stickshifts, max.
Working at the hotels on the beach is high end for valet, they probably wont hire you without experience to show you're not going to goof off in the cars (not that you would, but they dont know that). If you're still interested, the BEST place to valet park is for mom and pop high end restaurants where valet is complimentary. If you work for a valet company, and they charge $4 per car, guess what your average tip will be? The $1 left over from the $5 bill they give you, every time.
The service valet job is just shuttling cars around for dealerships. It usually pays 11-13 an hour, no tips, no real customers. Just don't wreck anything. Good luck!
