View Full Version : New Edmonton BMW owner.
teabagher 08-19-2007, 07:51 PM Anyhow, purchased a black on black 98 M3 from Michigan, then proceeded to drive it to Edmonton, fun. Had to do it because the prices for M cars in Alberta is so ridiculous.
Currently it is in the RIV process.
Pictures will be forthcoming (no digicam as of yet).
teabagher 08-19-2007, 07:56 PM Oh ya, I joined the facebook group as well.
MMmmmpower 08-19-2007, 08:34 PM Welcome, there are quite a few Edmonton members on here now
project37 08-20-2007, 02:55 PM I am not an M owner but an E38 owner also from Edmonton. Congrats on the purchase. I am sure the drive was enjoyable.

Nice ride!
Can I ask what your final landed price was?
teabagher 08-24-2007, 01:06 AM Not quite sure yet... Have not added it all up / kept all the receipts for gas etc
However I will put you in the ballpark:
Price: 9500 american totals 10,300 after exchange.
Tarrif and gst: 1000
RIV fees: 300
Out of Country inspection price: ???
Out of province inspection: 100-200
Plane ticket: 400
Gas: 250
Hotel rooms : 200
So I am looking at almost 13 thousand.
Car has 130,000 miles btw.
Congrats for your new ride. Out of country should be free - Canadian Tire (it's the 300 $ RIV fee). Check the post on how to import. Go to the registry NOW to get the form for Out of Province (this is the tough one) - and book appointment to inspect it. Once 8-10 days gone, phone Ottawa (have your customs papers ready - for numbers and such). Usually this is a very very sloooow process. If they didn't received your papers from customs (which happened to me both times I brought a car), fax them the papers, and they will send you in 1-2 days via e-mail or fax the papers for Out of Country inspection. Then go ASAP to Canadian Tire to book an appointment. In Calgary, close to where I live it's fridays only and sometimes one more day/week. Sometimes they are booked solid - or if lucky first come, first served.
This should shave off 10-15 days from this process.
Good luck
teabagher 08-24-2007, 12:47 PM Thanks for the tips Doru.
Do you know where to get the French airbag warning stickers? or do they just let the American english only stickers slide at the OOC inspection?
What about the odometer being in miles, do they let that slide or do I have to have it reprogrammed?
Other than that I have already done the day time running lights...

Although it's in the requirements, nobody ever asked about the stupid stickers. I think they will be "sticky" about it once you move east from here (Quebec or the adjacent provinces)
Same for odometer - I think they look actually at the speedometer. If they are posted in miles AND Km (which they are), you should be good to go. Watch for the child safety tethers (restraint system) and daytime running lights - they stick to it (I know you did the lights). Make sure ALL lights work etc. Get the Out of Province inspection sheet from your registry and book the out of province appointment. If you feel confident that everithing's OK with the car and you want to pinch a penny - go to Canadian Tire for this one as well (about 2-300 $ cheaper if remember correctly). If you want to keep the car, and other things are not OK, you can try the BMW dealership. They will do all the stuff for you, but everithing they have to fix, you will pay. If you don't want to have the stuff fixed by them, then you can do it yourself, but then you will have to go eventually back and re-do the out of province (which is very draconian and expensive) - get your ducks in a row. (A friend of mine opted for the Canadian Tire and he said it was all right. Had a newer car as well, but he was thinking of selling it, so he didn't want to do anything to it. As it turned out a year has passed and he never sold it yet - I guess he likes it)
Where you don't feel confident, just post your questions and hopefully they will be answered.
Good luck
