Well, its Monterey Historics week with Pebble Beach and all the auctions. We trailered 4 Ferrari's and 2 Lamborghini's, and drove up in the M3.
Aside from hitting a great road (CA198), which was 49 miles of switchbacks, sweepers and lots of elevation changes......with no traffic......we took a 'spirited drive down the PCH from Monterey to Big Sur with a 550 Maranello, Murcie roadster, a Aston DB6 and the M3.
My buddies in the 550 and the Murcie knew well enough to let me take off in the M3, but as soon as we slowed, the DB6 gave it full welly and blasted past me and off into the distance. I have never been one to say no to a challenge.......so it was off to see what the old Aston and it's driver had.
As good as the AM sounded and went, it was still '60s British technology. I had no problem reeling him in down a long straight.....and there was a tight section coming up! He was as game as anyone, especially considering his equipment. He dove fairly hard through the first 2 corners, but couldn't put any distance on me.
We were approaching some short straights followed by 2nd and 3rd gear corners...it was time to put him to the test! Accelerating hard out of a 3rd gear corner I start to reel him in fast. I catch him checking his mirrors...but he really needs to be setting up for the next series!
I was on him hard through the entire series. He was trying to brake later and later, but his brakes were obviously about to give up the ghost and that 40 year old chassis was looking a tad unbalanced. So I set him up at the last 2nd gear corner that led onto a nice straight. It was a simple matter of outbraking him, going down through a couple of gears..do a little left foot trail braking.......and off we go into the distance!
My buddies in the 550 and Lambo were nowhere to be seen, but the old Aston put up a good fight.......but no matter how good that car was in the 60's.......the game has moved on........considerably!
