Well, its Monterey Historics week with Pebble Beach and all the auctions. We trailered 4 Ferrari's and 2 Lamborghini's, and drove up in the M3.

Aside from hitting a great road (CA198), which was 49 miles of switchbacks, sweepers and lots of elevation changes......with no traffic......we took a 'spirited drive down the PCH from Monterey to Big Sur with a 550 Maranello, Murcie roadster, a Aston DB6 and the M3.

My buddies in the 550 and the Murcie knew well enough to let me take off in the M3, but as soon as we slowed, the DB6 gave it full welly and blasted past me and off into the distance. I have never been one to say no to a challenge.......so it was off to see what the old Aston and it's driver had.

As good as the AM sounded and went, it was still '60s British technology. I had no problem reeling him in down a long straight.....and there was a tight section coming up! He was as game as anyone, especially considering his equipment. He dove fairly hard through the first 2 corners, but couldn't put any distance on me.

We were approaching some short straights followed by 2nd and 3rd gear corners...it was time to put him to the test! Accelerating hard out of a 3rd gear corner I start to reel him in fast. I catch him checking his mirrors...but he really needs to be setting up for the next series!

I was on him hard through the entire series. He was trying to brake later and later, but his brakes were obviously about to give up the ghost and that 40 year old chassis was looking a tad unbalanced. So I set him up at the last 2nd gear corner that led onto a nice straight. It was a simple matter of outbraking him, going down through a couple of gears..do a little left foot trail braking.......and off we go into the distance!

My buddies in the 550 and Lambo were nowhere to be seen, but the old Aston put up a good fight.......but no matter how good that car was in the 60's.......the game has moved on........considerably!

Sounds like you had a great time! Nice driving, I hope to be able to do stuff like that. I'm a college student at the moment, so beyond maintenance, I can't really do anything with my wannabe-M3 325iS.

Enjoy it for what it is, a cool little car.

Ingenere's stories are always entertaining. It's like if those stupid stories about running stop signs blind and getting pulled over and the cop calls your mom, were good. That is NOT an insult, what I mean is that this is what those stories SHOULD be. Quality thread.

Don't put your car down ......enjoy it! Follow your dreams and work hard, and hopefully you will get to enjoy life and everything it has to offer..........before we all have to pack it in.

Have fun and be safe.......:)

Do you know if it was a Vantage, or a "regular" DB6?

I'm really surprised the old Aston was able to do as well as he seemingly did by the sounds of it. With acceleration falling somewhere between a 325 and 318 and a chassis that would doubtless be outclassed by any modern econobox, I should think it wouldn't put up much of a fight against a modern opponent unless modified...and rather heavily. We've got an old Austin Healey(a 3000 MkII BJ7 "Big Healey"), so I'm well aware that the sportscars of 40 years ago would mostly be pounded into the ground by a Civic today. They're immensely cool cars, though, especially an Aston! I'd love to have one, but sure wouldn't be tossing it around in the twisties :embarrasm Not because it isn't capable, but because of its expense and status as a collectible. If I killed a classic AM, I don't know what I'd do.

Good run, both of you.

It was neat to see him go for it.

It was such a great road! Absolutely perfect. Probably one of the 10 best drives I have had. I had to hit it on the way back today!

It really was no contest, but it made a great story....a great drive on a great road, with some great cars. Like I said........the game has moved on, considerably.

It's all about the drive!
