View Full Version : Faulty climate control module?

I have searched and found some info relating to this issue but no direct responses so here it is:

With my blower fan set at its lowest setting and the AC on or off (doesn't matter), the blower fan freaks out. It will start blowing really strong and then stop, then it will sound like my car is running out of breath and just blow in spurts and then, if I finally get pissed off and turn it off, it will start blowing at full fan speed somewhere else in the cabin(sounds like the freaking thing is purging or something). I believe it blows air out of the windshield vent. :dunno I basically have no control over what my AC does and doesn't do. Mind you this is not on the auto setting, its with me controlling everything manually. Sometimes it will settle down and stay steady for a while, and then freak out again. My sister was in the car for 20 minutes they other day and caught a cold, shes been out of work ever since (retard didn't think to just turn it off and roll the windows down)...:help

From what I've read this sounds like a faulty climate control module and I should just replace it and move along. My friends think I'm over reacting and as long as the AC is cold and the car blows something I shouldn't bother. I disagree and want to figure out why the f*ck this thing is acting retarded.

Mind you I am coming from a 93 318 in which my AC leaked and my controls were manual. I never had this problem because I never bothered fixing my condensor.

Thanks in advance.

do a search for blower resistor or stage unit- see if those symptoms match yours.

Its an electric module that fails, and in extreme cases can run the blower when you aren't even in the car!

Thanks Mark, first thread that popped up on that search gave me the answer I was looking for...I just didn't know what to search, haha.

Sounds like the final stage unit. Guess i'll be spending a $100 bucks today. :buttrock - :(

good deal! I was thinking that may be it- I figure if the buttons to change settings, etc work it must be the blower resistor. Hopefully it fixes you up.

I've heard some horror stories on changing that control panel. I may have to change one on the silver 528i I'm rebuilding, I hope not.

The FSU can be a PITA too but it's mostly due to working in the dash. Having parted out an e39 I think you can handle it :)

Yea, i'll be good. I gave my control panel to a Jensen (skipper5) because he needed it and is a very good friend of mine. You can PM him with any questions about changing it. Taking it out wasn't to hard but thats probably because I took the entire dash out with it, haha.

I'll be fine changing that FSU, it can't take to long judging from the write up I found. I along with you, happen to have the benefit of knowing where every screw and wire is. haha.

Hello all,

I think I might have a similar issue, vehicle is 02 E39 530i.

ISSUE: The blower fan will sporadically vary in speed and I can hear it speed up and slow down when the car is on/engine running. The really odd thing is the fan acts like this even when the car is completely shut off/key out of the ignition. I can sit in the car and hear it turn on and off (but only sending air to the driver and passenger footwells). This issue is causing the battery to drain to a point where the starter doesn't have enough juice to crank the motor.

Q: Do you guys think this is the FSU as well?

This is my first post on this forum! I've surfed this board many times before, but finally joined.

Thanks in advance..
