check out Bimmer World's website. I think they have what you are looking for:

scroll down, second from the bottom - E36 Carbon Center Dash Plate

I tried to make my own and I was not too happy with the results.

sorry for the shitty pic.

used abs textured plastic, then heated it to make the bend. i still use my ac/heat so i needed to keep the hot/cold.

Install was easy, but i also used the UUC oil cap so the oil temp/pressure senders was as simple as bolting on. i taped under the fuse box for the headlight fuse to light the gauges.

id like the center vent to still be functional - ive seen e30 setups, but not e36

I used an extra vent I had laying around, cut out the inside, filled it with some foam, then smoothed it over with some bondo. Then I wraped it with pleather.

For having a semi-stripped out track car, that's a pretty clean gauge install! :)

I just completed a center vent/radio DIN install project. I know it's more on the "race" end of things but I have a CAD drawing that you can print out 1:1, paste on your favorite material and cut out. You just have to brake it where indicated and bend roughly 13deg and it should fit like a glove. It covers the center vent(which you remove)and extends down to fill the radio DIN. It uses the brace at the top of the radio din for mounting screws(2). I got 6 gauges in it.....5- 2" and a XD-16 w/b gauge.

I used 6061 Alumimum at .061" thk but you could use whatever.....just remember, the thicker the material leave more on the bottom.

I'll post a pix here and if anyone wants it just shoot me a PM. I can send it in a PDF or ACAD format(dwg, dxf). You can view/print it with any ACAD free "viewer" type program...just remember to print it 1:1 on paper and you can use it as a trace.

Why doesn't someone try something like this?

Someone has...post #3. If you mean why isn't a vendor making something like that it's because of payback.
