View Full Version : Comparing a m20 525 vs m30 535
taseal 08-13-2007, 12:16 PM is the diff like day and night?
sayyy from an auto 525 to a manual 535 (my situation right now)
found a great 535, 5 speed, 2nd owner, no prev accidents, and is the charcoal color. it is an 89)
just want to know if the diff is that noticable :)
He doesn't know the mileage because the light on the odometer is out. I told him to shine a flashlight at it and he could see. he said he couldn't do that right now because he was driving (uhhh, so do it later and let me know?) I told him I don't want to buy a car that has 200,000 miles on it and he said even if it did have that many miles it drives like brand new. he said everything is in great condition. He wants 2,000 for it. has new clutch, new water pump, and new radiator hoses, and new timing belt.
moonsspoon 08-13-2007, 12:41 PM These engines don't have timing belts. Sounds fishy, just like mine, but I still love it. =)

hmm....
the guy is like 130 miles away from me. only way to check it out would be to go there, and dirve the SHIT out of it, and see if the clutch holds, if it does i'm fine with it lol. maybe he meant the chain? he said he has all the receipts from maintancance so....
well how does yours pull? I'm thinking same territory as a m52.
m1943 08-13-2007, 01:09 PM Dude, if both cars were automatics, the difference would have been like day and night. If the M20 car is auto and the M30 is a stick - thats day on earth and night on the moon kind of difference. The M30 is just over 200 HP (don't remember), gets a lot of power on the low. M20 is what, 168 HP? Plus a stupid 4-speed automatic?
Dude, if you can get rid of an auto 525 for a manual 535, you should do it yesterday. The only thing is, you MPG will suffer; the M30 was not the most economical power plant, which is probably why they switched to the small-block V8...
I'm getting 31.8 mpg (according to the OBC) highway with my M50/stick. No way you could do that with an M30. Then again, you're probably not doing that well with your M20/auto, neither. Your call.
taseal 08-13-2007, 01:11 PM man, i want an efficient car because I drive about 70 miles a day. but something in me tells me I need the POWAH...
sausrigging 08-13-2007, 01:18 PM E34 535/5 is a great car and every enthusiast should own one at some point.I have to agree with m1943 with them not being very fuel efficient, thats why I got my e36. dynoing above 240whp and still getting 25+ miles to the gallon on the freeway.
taseal 08-13-2007, 01:33 PM is the mileage that bad? like 15mpg or some shit? lol

pacogrande 08-14-2007, 02:30 PM I was getting 17-18 city, 24-26 Highway and was averaging 21mpg three or four months ago in my '90 535i 5speed. After putting in the 3.91 LSD it dropped about 2mpg's. I get 15-17 city, 23-24 highway and average around 19.5 mpg now. Worth every penny.
taseal 08-14-2007, 05:27 PM as long as i'm getting 20mpg combined, I'll be happy. of course i want more mpg, but 20 is the same as the truck i drive now so it ain't bad (well roughly, actally i get around 17)
i'm really excited, i fond a real nice 535 that i'll be checking out friday, i hope the guy doesn't sell it by than.
Jcbe34 08-14-2007, 05:33 PM I used to get 20-23mpg with my 535i 5 speed. I loved that car, I would definitely buy another one in addition to the 540i
taseal 08-14-2007, 05:39 PM hopefully this one will be nice (one i'm getting) its a 5spd too... my fringers are crossed that the car is still there btw I have th emoney on friday

nice! haha
how about the m52? :)
plus, how much does a m30 e34 weigh? I couldn't find anything on that one
Jcbe34 08-14-2007, 06:38 PM I'd say the m30 definitely has more grunt than the m52. Just drive one and you'll see. But then again an m30 e34 gives up some weight to an e36 so its hard to say on the m52 vs. m30 argument
taseal 08-14-2007, 06:42 PM anyone have 2 grand I can borrow? i will give it back on friday, i promise :)

535 PLEASeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
sausrigging 08-15-2007, 11:04 AM the m52 will easily eclipse the m30 with just a couple of mods. some s52 cams brings it up ove 200whp
moonsspoon 08-15-2007, 11:07 AM Only getting a whopping 10-13 strictly city mpg with my m30. We'll see what a general tune up does for those numbers. And as far as pull goes, it's amazing. Tons of low end torque, and around 4-5k is scary. But then again, I can only compare it to the piece of shit '92 corolla that I drove before.
