im looking to get a new cat? experiences and recomendations are aprecaited, how much should i be looking to spend? thanks

i currently have a magnaflow muffler and a resonator delete, i like how raspy it is, but my current cat smokes a little after i run her really hard, so i figured its probably a good time to change it.ha.

cats have nothing to do with smoking or lack of it.

I'd go with Magnaflow if you're looking for a durable but cheap cat. I've got one and it's been fine.

well the smoke was coming out in the little space between the headers to the cat.

Ah - well that just means you have a leak. Just take it to an exhaust shop [or any type of mechanic, for that matter] and have them weld it shut. You should also notice a decrease in raspyness if you close the hole up.

Well BMW OEM Cats run about $1100 a piece ( I have 2) so I am not likely to change my cats "while I am at it......" AFtermarket Cats run about $500 apiece. Enjoy! - JT

I'd rather pay the extra $25 every year for a "special" inspection than fit new cats.

Factory BMW cats have enough precious metals in them that you can actually sell the old (scrap) one on eBay, buy a new car sound magnaflow and still have lots of money left over. Ever wonder why there are so many trolls in the WTB/For Sale section here hunting down cats? There's a reason for it...Palladium is $350+ an OUNCE.

Depending on application, the magnaflow equivalent is less than $100 on eBay, usually less direct from peformancepeddler.com. I paid retail for the TWO on my V12 Touring (helping another shop out...) and they charged me 100% markup -- $220. The factory cats are better, admittedly, but...

One easy way to check cat performance if you don't have a gas machine handy is a handheld infrared thermometer. But, I wouldn't just get rid of it for the sake of getting rid of it, especially since it sounds like the OP just needs new exhaust gaskets.
