Hi,
First of all, I have a 07/95 530i with m60 v8. Things might be a little different with this motor. Reading and clearing the codes as indicated by the Bentley manual just doesn't seem to work. The initial stomp test does start the codes, but that's where the instructions seem to stop working.
While attempting to see how I could make my engine run worse, I pulled the plug on the automatic idle control. Plugged it back in and things ran horribly for a moment, then normal again.
I got in the car and did the stomp test (in case you don't know what the stomp test is, it's ignition to position 2 without starting, pedal past the detent 5 times within 5 seconds) and it showed me the code for the AIC.
I noticed last night after doing the same thing with the MAF that I couldn't get the code to advance to 1000, which means no more codes present. So, I checked here, and the only advice I saw was to disconnect the battery or disconnect the computer, so I did the latter, and the codes reset.
However, tonightb I got creative.
The code 1262 just kept repeating, as usual. Not like what the Bentley says. So, here's what I did:
I just did the stomp test again. After the code repeated enough times that I was convinced it would just keep repeating, as usual, I just slammed the accelerator pedal to the floor 5 times in 5 seconds. Please note, with this car, I don't need to let it all the way up -- just above the detent is fine.
Voila, code 1000 showed, and I held the pedal to the floor for 10 seconds, turned off the ignition, turned it back on, did the stomp routine again, and showed code 1444, no codes present.
So, here's my method to reset codes in the event that your car doesn't react like the Bentley says it should.
I might go and try to store multiple codes if I can, to see if the pentuple stomp is the method for advancing the codes on this motronic 3.3 system. I'm guessing it just might be. Strangely, I already tried: I disconnected the AIC and the MAF, but never got the code for the AIC, and the engine didn't do the high-low-high-low idle thing it did the first time I disconnected it, all I got was the MAF code. Hope I didn't break anything. :)
Hope this helps,
Rolf
