Anyone have experience removing anodized coatings. I have about .06 mils on my wheels that I would like to get it off w/out damaging the polished aluminum underneath.
I found this kit on the net: http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/alwheel.htm

I also found that some use 5% caustic (sodium hydroxide) and 95% H2O (water) in a bath heated no less than 140 degrees for 3-20 minutes depending out the mil thickness.:help

I always thought that anodized wheels meant the entire metal was treated with it and there was no way of getting it off because it was the metal itself.

I would like to know the for-sure answer on this as well!

Perhaps Eastwood has what you need.

Why the removal...is the finish dull...?

a profesional may be needed to remove it..

if ur up to the task of tire removal and the rest of the steps..go for it
experience with the drill/HS polisher is a must..or ull scratch the aluminum
wish u good luck on it

No, the finish is OK. It is a gloss black and I really don't dig the all black theme of the car. So, under the anodized black is a nice polished aluminum that would look really nice. I have experience polishing and sanding but the removal of this coating is where I hit the wall. I was going to media blast it but the manufacturer said that would not work as chemical stripping is the only way to get down to bare aluminum without harming the surface.

It looks like I am going to buy the kit from Caswell or find a pro and see how much they would charge ( I am not looking to spend much money to have them stripped down). Below is a picture of what the wheels look like now.

And below right is what I am hoping they will look like when I am done with them.

as a suggestion

you could try a trade or sell the wheels and buy a clean used set for the same price and you wouldn't pay and have to refinish and go through the trouble if u FIU

You are in NY someone will want them

Thing is that I love these wheels and they are hard to come by. Finding someone to trade with is highly unlikley.
If I just could speak with someone who has done this before I could avoid the pitfalls and not have any FU's

Don't laugh, but has anyone ever suggested easy-off oven cleaner?
No joke. I've seen it done on chrome and anodized moldings instead of having them rechromed. The parts were stripped and polished instead.

Actually I did hear that this works but that it can be harsh on the aluminum, so I do not want to take any chances of ruining these as they are pretty expensive.
