I've been reading on here for a while and have gotten good advice for my father-in-law's '99 540iT so I thought I'd come here for some help.

When accelerating there is a clicking noise from the engine bay, sounds like the fan is hitting the shroud or something. Noise gets louder while pressing the accelerator down farther and almost goes away completely with cruise control on. I've read through some posts and seems like it may be the radiator fan but wanted to get some opinions.

Check the engine and tranny mounts, it could be that the engine is moving enough during acceleration for the fan to contact the shroud.
