the check engine light just popped up on my 1994 325is with 83000 miles. wondering if anybody in the bay area will be able to hook me up with service for a good price. I live in Redwood City and am willing to go where I need to for good service at decent prices. What do these type of problems usually run? thanks!

check engine light just came on in my 1994 325is. wondering if somebody could service it for a good price in the bay area. I live in Redwood city but I am willing to drive where ever the best service and best prices are? If you aren't a mechanic, got any good recomendations that charge reasonable prices? I'm a college student with a small wallet so any info helps. thanks!!!

I'd recommend to read the fault code first.

http://www.peakeresearch.com/code_tool.htm
I have this tool but you can also check the link below and read the code (never tried myself though).

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/motronic.html

Sometimes it's just the lose gas cap (had this fault once) so
you may not need to spend any $$.

Hope this helps..

thanks for the help! I talked to one of the dealers at peterpan BMW and he told me that it is probably the gas cap that set the light off but the only thing is she said it could take up to four days for the light to reset! Is that true or is that bull. Anyways, I guess I have no choice but to wait it out.

have you ever tried that check method that www.unofficialbmw.com is talking about? I may be totally wrong but wouldn't this method flood the engine.

It could also be your o2 sensor. Mine was going out on me and triggered the check engine light. Argh.... I still need to replace it!!!

how much does it cost to replace the o2 sensor? Is it a project that I could do on my own or do I have to bring it to a shop?

I can swap your 02 sensor. $20? I have one that is used but good sitting in my garage. They are about $65 new I think. I have the special socket to swap them. Let me know, we are doing an installfest tomorrow in Danville, I can do it then if you get the part. Check the code first though!

THANKS!!! I don't have the scan tool so I am not sure if that is the problem yet but if my check engine light is still on tomorrow(Peter pan bmw told me to tighten the gas cap and wait four days just incase that was the problem) I think I'll be making a trip down to Danville. I was under the impression that the installfests were only for certain services but can we sign up for whatever we need done as long as it's not a huge project?

Generally we want people to sign up ahead of time so that we can schedule accordingly. We had a cancellation so tomorrow looks pretty light. Email rob@mpactmotorsports.com if you are going to swing by. I'll bring the socket just in case. We should be there until around 2pm

Why don't you do the stomp test to read the codes? Since you have a 94, you don't need to use a scan tool to pull the codes. Instructions are here:

I have figured out that it is the ego sensor which is the oxygen sensor right?

at least you'll know what's wrong... who knows it might be something easy you can fix yourself
