View Full Version : Overheat. What was your reason?

Just trying to quantify how many people overheated in the past, particularly if you overheat only on track or autocross, and why. If you choose cracked head or block, please specify what test found the crack, and what your course of action was to fix.

"was the head straight?" " it looks good"

Turns out looks good must have checkd it with a rope...On track when the car gets nice and toasty it sprays coolent from a water jacket on the outside...No oil/water contamination or burning water through combustion..

Drive it all day on the street zereo issues...Only under track use over 10 minutes at WOT...

Needless to say I won't use the same machine shop again...

Back when I was a noob at cars, my mechanic forgot to tighten one of the radiator hoses enough and coolant started leaking while I was driving, causing it to overheat. That caused the head gasket failure and cracked head. That was not a fun 2 months.

I took it to a european indy shop first and they told me the gasket was blown after doing some exhaust chemical detection test. I then did all the work myself and took the head to a specialized cylinder head shop to have it shaved and they told me the head was cracked. They cut that part out and fixed it all up then welded it back in to the head. I then put it all back together and it's worked great since.

How did they find the crack? Was it visible?

We had a tiny crack in a head once that would let the car run hard for 30 min. sprint races, but overheat after about 40 to 45 minutes.

Once again, how was it diagnosed?? What kind of testing found it?

Thanks,

We had a suspension bolt (from a Neon) that broke off and went through two screens and lodged itself into the radiator. It looked like someone shot it out of a rifle.

I didn't know that repair was possible, cool.

the chemical detection test is pretty neat. the 'kit' detects combustion gases (probably just hydrocarbons) in the cooling system.

Im going to try that chemical test again too. Although, some people say that it comes up negative even though a tiny crack is present....

How do i go about getting the test done?

I borrowed the tester from Autozone, but had to get the dye from NAPA.

I have not had a problem with overheating, I voted other so I could see the pole.

They did some kind of flow/leak check on the engine - I'll have to call the shop to get the correct name for the test. But they were able to fix the head (send out to a head shop).

I voted other because my overheat was caused by a leak on a fitting that is used to attach a heater hose from the head to the throttle body.

Chose other due to a pinhole hole in my radiator thanks to an exploding motor fan.
