Just bought a 1989 BMW 316. Drove it around for the first few days, no problems. Now when I turn the key all the "idiot" lights come on but the car won't start. The headlight are bright when I turn them on, so I am thinking its the starter. (car makes no noise whatsoever)

Am I on the right track, or is there something I can try before taking it in to get worked on?

Same problem I'm having with my '78 320i. It was my starter... Now I'm walking all weekend :( It'll be here on Monday.

Here are some things to check. Load test the battery. Check that the battery cable connections are clean. Check for 12 volts to starter solenoid with the key in the start position. These things should be checked first then the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter and starter solenoid. One of these may be faulty.
