New to the board, but have been lurking for a while. Recently finished my 1961 Mini...

Time to concentrate on the 2002.

It's a 1976 Chamoix 2002, lowered, front strut bar, twin Mikunis.

Needs some TLC now. I definitely don't like the wheels on it currently, 15" HRE's, a little too 80's (for sale btw)...

SO, I happened upon some 14x6.5" Gotti split-rims. What do you think of these? Also, anyone ever seen this style before(close up below)??...

Lastly, what would everyone recommend for rubber on the Gottis, in a Ultra-High/High performance summer tire?

Thanks for the read/help, and I look forward to picking everyone's brains, some good conversation, and drooling over other's 2002s!

Cheers,
Ian

Nice Mini!

IMHO both sets of wheels might look better with the centers painted, say, black or anthracite. I believe that the relatively thick section where the bolts are located (as compared to BBS RS wheels, for example) makes them look somewhat busy.

Keep us posted on your progress!

I've looked at the photos. I'm not to taken by the Gottis either.

Simply put, wheels are a personal preference thing to each owner. The wheels can make or break the appearance of any car, let alone a 2002.

Tires, if you are sticking with 14" are not great as far as choices. That tire size is dying rapidly. The 14" BMW E30 3 series 1984-1991 have inexpensive bottlecap type wheels

and the Basketweave type BBS in 14:.

In 15" which is what my car has below, you have a lot of performance and all season options. I prefer Bridgestones and Yokohamas in that size, depending on what seasons you will drive the car. The Potenza RE750s are excellent tires in 195/50/15, thats a summer tire with lots of grip, but you would need to track down 15" rims instead of investing in 14" tires.

Cris P, here on this board, has some 15" wheels available new for awesome prices. The rubber under the car makes so much differences in how the car feels on the road.

My advice is - your car looks great in the photos, so don't skimp on something you could have paid a few bucks more for and be totally satisfied with in the end.

Ebay is full of those old decisions and the auction prices prove it.

You are very correct about eBay and bad decisions. The Gottis are cheap, and VERY light. For now they will suffice, as I don't have another set to put on, and I'd rather get rid of the HREs rather than let them take up space.

I would love to find some Alpinas, but that's not easy as we all know.

I'd like to do something a little different, and preferably a bit vintage. The car's gonna be off the road for a while, so that leaves plenty of time for scouring the net, forums, and eBay. I know where to find a set of Mahle-BBS, but I think I'll have to buy the rusty '02 attached to them...which isn't EVER a bad thing, its just, I have nowhere to put it!

Thanks for the input everyone, keep it up!

-Ian.

Yokohama Avid 4's come in 14" and are one heck of a tire

But what do you do when you have a set of the BBS Mahle cross spoke wheels in 13? Try finding a 205-60-13 I think there are maybe 3 brands...

13 inch fat tires are getting hard to come by. Last set I found that was reasonable were goodyears and that was 2 years ago.

Good point about the 13" wheels/tires. Well I think I will try to concentrate on the 15" end of things.

I like the Alpina looks, and I've got the time to save up for the repros, or any other wheel for that matter!

Thanks for the input, and the thread near here asking for pictures of wheels and offsets helps a lot too.

Now if I could just read German and the shipping wouldn't kill me, I'm sure I'd find something tasty on eBay.de...

Cheers,
Ian

Several companies also have wheels for 02s for sale. And lots of other goodies as well. I have never bitten the bullet and bought from them . But oh, have I been very tempted.
