Can someone explain the benefits of a 40% 2-clutch diff vs. the stock M-variable unit? I'm a monthly HPDE track-rat in a street/track compromise vehicle. I've come across a good deal on a new diffsonline 4.10 unit, but I'm concerned it's not a M-variable unit.

The diffsonline unit is superior to the M-variable. The LSD is definately an upgrade over the stock M-variable. The diffsonline diff provides better traction under acceleration and deceleration. It is also better at putting power down out of the corners, especially the wheel that is not under load unlike the M-variable.

Yeah, the M-variable isn't a good track differential...ditch it.
Thanks for the advice guys, that alleviates all of my concerns.

How does the M variable diff work? I have always wondered that...

That was a hell of a description in that link!
Basically they M variable unit leaves some extra play in the spider gears which is how it adds lock so quick when it needs to, while going with a salisbusy style LS carrier will have more preload than the M variable and the locking action is controlled more by ramps (physics) than the internal pump.

So in english are you saying that the M-variable unit is more flexible, but at the expense of a "lag" when distributing torque?

The m variable unit gets clunky after continued abusive driving. This is why so many were replaced under warranty.
