OK... so I'm debating my suspension setup... currently have TMS H&R/Bilstein Sport, and like it... but the struts are worn out.

The car sees 6-8 DEs a year, now including some time trialling since I have a roll bar. Tires are BFG G-Force KD, stock M20.

The car is also my daily driver, and for now, it gets me to and from the track events. Seats are stock sport leather, but at some point, will be changed over to something like a Corbeau FX1. Tow vehicle is not in the near future.

Would I be an idiot to put the J-stock springs and struts on this car?

What about a Spec E30 suspension?

I have driven the J-Stock suspension on the street, and it's not fun. I currently have Billie Sports/H&R Sports in my daily driver. They are about as stiff as I would like. I know a few guys that use the J-Stock suspension in their street driven M3s, but they mainly drive to events only and have a dedicated DD.

The Spec E30 suspension would definitely be more streetable.

The J-stock one is stiffer so arguably preferrable on the track, a few do complain that it's not great on not so smooth tracks but the fast J-stock guys I know go fast no matter which track they're at.

so if I'm understanding correctly:

In order of streetability and performance:

Streetability <------------------------------------------> Performance
H&R Sport .............................. Spec E30 .......................... J Stock

Correct. I would never think if daily driving the JS setup, besides the uncomfortableness of it, you are going to wear your car out a lot faster as well. I did DD the H&R Race in my M3 for 8 months, and was perfectly fine. You need to watch out for holes and whatnot, and don't even think about doing 60 over the construction areas on the highway, but with a little care you'll be all set.

H&R Races are not too stiff for a daily driver IMO. I have them on my e30 with bilstein sports.

I would agree with what others have said, I used to have a J-stock car that I ran on the street and then track only. It was pretty rough on the street and would not recommend it unless you are the hard core type. I now have a spec E30 car that is track only but the suspension is a little bit softer which I think would be ok on the street. It also depends a lot on what you do with your bushings. If you want it to be a little bit more compliant for the street stick with the stock rubber bushings.

I agree with that. I have stock rubber strut mounts and shock mounts and all spring pads are in place. I think it rides great.

Thanks all for the info... looks like I'll time to mull it over, but it looks more like I'll end up just replacing the shocks/struts for now. I'll be dropping some money on the motor since its apart (broke a rocker arm over the weekend, thought I had a blown head gasket).

So, I'll be searching and maybe posting again on what to upgrade there lol.

woohoo :rolleyes

The rocker arm break is a common failure. VAC has billet rocker arms for the M20 but they are $1200 a set

Well... problem as always... is that I'm 2-1/2 hrs from everywhere. Bill's not cheap, but I do trust him, and he knows his E30s. Probably do same as what I did on the Z... clean, level the head... change the seals, maybe a valve job, but not sure it needs one.
