toganet 08-06-2007, 05:10 PM Ok, I am looking to pick up an E28 as a project to get ready for when I sell my E39. I have three to choose from, so I need help deciding:
Option 1: 87 528e auto, 130k miles, needs front brakes & tires, some rust.
Option 2: 84 528e 200k no rust, needs radiator
Option 3: 83 528e 192k 5-speed, needs airflow meter, some rust.
Prices are similar for all.
I don't intend to track any of these -- I'm looking for something that will be a daily driver with some classic style.
Travis R 08-06-2007, 05:55 PM IMO, ignore anything with an auto... if not for performance, then for reliability. Then go with the one with best maintenance history.
Otto Krosse 08-06-2007, 07:44 PM Also, avoid anything with rust!!
I suggest you keep looking, there are nice cars out there. You'll be happier if you wait and get a good one. I suggest you look for a nice 535is, you'll like the sport seats much better than the "comfort" seats, they are a joke!
Watch craigslist and the for sale section on roadfly.com.
rags535 08-08-2007, 02:12 AM They're right; NO auto;too unreliable.
'82/83 cars not as good as later ones.
Try to keep looking if you have the time.
Look in classifieds at www.mye28.com , and www.roadfly.com BMW websites,if not here.

I beg to differ! My '88 535iA has been STONE RELIABLE, especially in regards to it's auto transmission. I bought it with 154,000 miles, it's now at 190,000 and I haven't done more than check the fluid level.
I don't fear an auto one bit as long as it's fluid doesn't smell burnt and it shifts smoothly.
vertvert 08-11-2007, 12:20 PM I have a 1988 528e with a auto tranny and runs great for a DD.
