Ok, I am looking to pick up an E28 as a project to get ready for when I sell my E39. I have three to choose from, so I need help deciding:

Option 1: 87 528e auto, 130k miles, needs front brakes & tires, some rust.
Option 2: 84 528e 200k no rust, needs radiator
Option 3: 83 528e 192k 5-speed, needs airflow meter, some rust.

Prices are similar for all.

I don't intend to track any of these -- I'm looking for something that will be a daily driver with some classic style.

IMO, ignore anything with an auto... if not for performance, then for reliability. Then go with the one with best maintenance history.

Also, avoid anything with rust!!

I suggest you keep looking, there are nice cars out there. You'll be happier if you wait and get a good one. I suggest you look for a nice 535is, you'll like the sport seats much better than the "comfort" seats, they are a joke!

I beg to differ! My '88 535iA has been STONE RELIABLE, especially in regards to it's auto transmission. I bought it with 154,000 miles, it's now at 190,000 and I haven't done more than check the fluid level.

I don't fear an auto one bit as long as it's fluid doesn't smell burnt and it shifts smoothly.

I have a 1988 528e with a auto tranny and runs great for a DD.
