View Full Version : Mechanical Gauge hookup?
trackE36 08-06-2007, 04:19 PM Im going to go with mechanical water temp and oil pressure gauges, im assuming the ECU needs an input from the stock water temp sending unit. So where is the best place hook up the water temp gauge? On the oil pressure Im guessing the easiest way is to use the spot for the idiot liot sending unit and delete the idiot light? Whats the best way ? Thanks.

GotBHP? 08-06-2007, 04:26 PM You can easily tap the thermostat housing for the H2O temp. As for oil, I would get a distribution block on the filter housing and get temp and pressure from there. Keep the idiot light for redundancy.
trackE36 08-06-2007, 05:01 PM Thanks Peter I was thinking about tapping the housing like you suggested or cutting the hose and fabbing a steel tube (1.5" rool bar tubing) but of course that would add two more clamps. And I like your oil pressure idea also, is that how you did yours? Thanks

I did the distribution block thing on my e36. The nsx has a water temp sensor inline with a coolant hose, oil pressure at the opening of an accusump and oil temp in place of the idiot light switch (car has a redundant pressure gauge anyways). Front engine cars = much easier to work on.
trackE36 08-06-2007, 05:22 PM If I tap the housing what side of the housing is inlet and outlet?
millm3 08-06-2007, 05:23 PM What about the an oil pressure switch with integrated sensor?

trackE36 08-06-2007, 05:27 PM And did get the BW distribution block for the water temp or what?
trackE36 08-06-2007, 05:54 PM oops I meant did you get the distribution block for the OIL PRESSURE from BW or where?

I had that one back in the day, although I dont remember it being red. Bimmerworld looks to have a similar one, and they are a forum sponsor ;)

trackE36 08-06-2007, 06:26 PM Cool thanks Peter. Anybody know which side of the thermostat housing is the engine outlet side?
skiboard06 08-06-2007, 06:44 PM if your looking at the motor from the front of the car the hot side is on the right of the thermostat housing.
edit: so tap the right side.
trackE36 08-06-2007, 06:52 PM Thanks Skiboard06 and to all the others for the quick responses, you guys rock! thanks again ..I will post some pics of the build once I meet the requirements of the room.

GotBHP? 08-06-2007, 06:57 PM FWIW I have a brand new and unopened VDO pressure sender if you are interested. 0-150 psi, standard ground.
Thanks Peter I was thinking about tapping the housing like you suggested or cutting the hose and fabbing a steel tube (1.5" rool bar tubing) but of course that would add two more clamps. And I like your oil pressure idea also, is that how you did yours? Thanks

Even better than the oil block (IMO), is the UUC oil center. Cleaner, easier to install, less prone to leaks.

That thread is pry more than you'll ever want to know.
vinnymac 08-07-2007, 01:56 PM Get an oil distribution block or run a tapped oil filter housing for pressure and temp senders.
You can tap the t-stat housing or run an inline fitting in your radiator hose for water temps. Just keep in mind the inherent weakness with this setup is you won't know if your t-stat sticks closed if you don't pay attention to your stock idiot light.
trackE36 08-07-2007, 08:51 PM thanks for the idea on the uuc oil distribution center Mr.M .And thanks Vinnymac I never would have thought about not getting a reading from a t-stat failure. But if theres not a better way then I guess I have to go with the inline at the top hose. I do have the fan delete with a Spal 16" electric and I want to know the water temps as accurately as I can.
