View Full Version : Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
84E24 08-06-2007, 01:38 PM Anyone have one of these on their 6? Was talking to the rep at Bav Auto about it and he said some people like it and some people don't even notice the difference. They sell one for ~ $200. Just curious if its worth the cost.
Anyone have one installed on their car that would like to share whether they like it or not? And if you noticed any performance gains or just a smoother idle and more responsive throttle?
fawcett 08-06-2007, 03:37 PM Id also like to know, I replaced mine w/ an oem Bosch one and my fuel pressure dropped 10 psi and milage went up 2 mpg. But I must say my car had just a little bit more power before I changed it, so maybe being able to adjust it to be higher pressure would make it a little more powerful when you're in need?
84E24 08-06-2007, 03:54 PM Bavauto site says it enriches the fuel mixture as you accelerate to increase power and improve mid-range throttle response. Maintains stock fuel mixtures at idle.
Sounds nice and all but I dont want to plop down $200 unless I know for sure it makes a difference and it does what it says.
Anyone have this?
jbd5015 08-06-2007, 04:29 PM I thought that the adjustable fuel pressure regulators or rising rate fuel pressure regulators were used more for tuned engines. Im sure they work fine on a stock motor. I would tend to think that if you spend a few thousand dollars on making the engine have a credible increase in power, lets say 20% or more, that to make it run smoother, you would spend 200 bucks on helping the fuel system. Id say if you are going to spend 200 bucks trying to make the car faster, get a chip. Or, spend some money on brakes and suspension, this way you dont have to slow down as much for corners, and when you do, you cant late brake to keep your average speed up...

84E24 08-06-2007, 04:41 PM Thanks for all the info. I never really wanted to purchase the AFPR for the power increase, but rather in the hopes that it would improve throttle response a bit. Any HP increase would likely just be a bonus IMO. I just want a smooth running car, and I figured $200 wasn't too bad if it was really worth it.
I did not know, however, that it was designed for modified/tuned engines. The Rep at Bav never mentioned it. It does make a lot of sense though. I would definitely spend the cash if I was running that type of setup.
As for a chip, I would love to get one but I have never seen one available for an 84. Please let me know if you are aware of one. I'm still a BMW n00b for all intensive purposes. I appreciate all you guys help!
jbd5015 08-06-2007, 08:17 PM There really isnt a chip for anything other than the later motronic systems. THe ECU that ends in 059 is the one that has all the software capabilities. You can swap the systems im pretty sure. Ive been wanting to do a turbo kit on my car, 2/83 build date, so i have the older ECU, ends in 008. Im going through TCD, and all the options end with "you need an 059 ECU and wiring harness jeff". Im pretty sure the 84 still has the 008. If you want a smoother running car and idle, look at anything that is connected with the vacuum system (ICV, CSV, Dipstick sealer, oil cap seal). If there is a small leak, idle and running can be hindered. Cleaning the electric contacts on almost everything can help the car run smoother. These engines are bulletproof, but keeping up with all the stupid electrical and vacuum crap can really make them run great.

84E24 08-07-2007, 08:13 AM Thanks for the info. Where can I find out what ECU I have?
Cleaning the contacts and checking small vacuum issues is something I haven't gotten around to this year yet. I really should go over everything carefully and see.
jbd5015 08-07-2007, 09:19 AM Open the glove box, take the vinyl curtain down thats attached to the top, and see if you can see a tag on the aluminum box that is up in there. If the tag is orange, you have an 059, if the tag is purple, you have an 008. I suspect you have an 008 because you have an 84 633 which runs the M30B32 motor like i have.

alpinacsi 08-07-2007, 09:26 AM Are you sure about the purple and orange? I have 2 059s at my desk that are purple (1 is 28 pin chip and the other is 24) and I have an orange/red tag #061.
I agree that he probably has the 008 but I am not sure that the tag color is a "tell all".
84E24 08-07-2007, 10:19 AM My ECU is an 008 but it has a red/orange tag. I was curious because although my 6 is an 84 633, I have a 3.5l swap from a 735. I was never sure if it was an 84 or 85 735.
So looks like no chip for me. Oh well. Not a huge deal though. Thats pretty much what I figured in the first place.
jbd5015 08-07-2007, 11:40 AM Good call todd, i actually just looked at my spare 008 and its orange, and the 059 i have is purple. Both my 008's are orange, just got the colors mixed up. It probably isnt the best way to tell which you have, but of the ecu's ive seen, they have been the same color tags.
