Hey,

Seen in the local listings a 1981 635CSi "Euro".

Now if my research serves me correctly.. there was no 635's in '81.. just 633's

The car is going for dirt cheap.. seller told me this about it.

Hello, bought the car in kansas city seems like 6 years ago, drove it around for a month or two. Total miles I put on it were only a few hundred. The car was tight and fast then, no engine misses or tranny problems. I believe the engine and transmission are both really good. Put the car in the garage with plans of restoration. Seems like about two years ago I tried to get it running, bought a cheapo battery and tried to start it. Never could get it to start. I suspected the fuel pump or relays, but I'm not the best mechanic. I never had a professional look at it. Whatever went wrong was just caused by it sitting there I suppose. The body of the car has been bondo'd in places. The interior is cloth, with tears. It's all there.

It's being sold for $500. Prolly has a bad pickup coil for the CPS or something of that nature.

My biggest concern is that if it is indeed some kinda special Euro model, would that make parts even harder to find?

Any of your vintage 6'rs knowledge would be greatly appreciated. :)

The 635 was introduced in Europe for the 78 model year. Many of the components interchange with the US models of the same vintage but the engine internals might be different. Eventhough they might be different, the parts are still readily available and are not any more expensive than the US parts.

The no start could be nothing more than dirty contact on relays and in fuse box.

Thanks.. I suspected many of the parts were interchangable.

So is this a "rare" vehicle to find?

I'm guessing its a lefthand drive car. $500 seems dirt cheap.

I might add that the '81 will be based on the e12 5-series components as opposed to the later six's that are based on the e28 5-Series.

It is easily a good price as a parts car, much less a runner. I can't remember at the moment if that gives you the M90 motor, which gives you even better value.

Did the 81's come standard w/ M90?
I've looked.. and am finding it tough to ref. an 81 euro having the M90.. 79,80,82 is all I could find.

The thing is an hour away, wont run now, would have to rent a trailer to bring it back...

How difficult would an auto/manual swap be on this model? Any rough price for a low mile trans.?

Any online schematics for the wiring on these?

Any online schematics for the wiring on these? I am pretty sure that an 81 would have the M90 engine, But it may depend on the switch over date.. What you need is the VIN to verify the car & build date. I have not seen an early 635 based on the E12 with an Automatic transmission. But a VIN check will authenticate the whole car.
