My wife's friend gave us her 1999 VW Jetta to sell. Can anyone suggest a good forum to get some info?
Seems like these cars have some serious design defects, like the power windows. They seem to break all the time, far more frequently than BMW ones!:eyecrazy

www.vwvortex.com

if you need anything posted up, let me know.. and I can help out if you want...

I even know a bunch of the guys over there, as well as shane I'm sure as he hangs out with a lot of them as well..

If you need any hook ups let me know and Ill see what I can do when i get back in a couple weeks.. unless you need everything fixed now..

they also have a very active hawaii island regional section over on the forum as well

gah i hate working on VWs!!
i remember i had to replace the alternator and ac comp. on one jetta.
gah
had to remove the whole front end (bumper, headlights, grill, support, radiator, etc) just to get to the alternator and AC compressor.
than it had a parasitic drain which needed to be found.
but atleast when vw's come to our shop my boss goes go ahead head vw tech. hahahaha

on the cars that requires removal of the bumper to get to the compressor it's most likely a VR6...been there done that.

I used to frequent the local vwvortex forum as I used to own a bunch of them...but for the mk4 (I'm assuming it's not an early '99 mk3 my sister had) Woody can tell you alllll about the power window regulators ;)

What kind of info do you need?

Looks like I'm going to need to replace all four regulators!
I think I'm going to do the small stuff, replace the plugs, cap and rotor.
Did need some help on the stupid privacy shade for the sunroof, the headliner on it is pulling off.
Also, does anyone have a radio for one of these they'd like to sell? The one we've got has a faceplate that's in pieces!
Any advice on an the auto trans service? Car's got 60k on it. Should I change fluid and filter? On a BMW I'd do it in a heartbeat but have no idea on these VW's.
Thanks!

Tell your wife's friend to just donate it to Kidney Cars...if they'll take it!

I wouldn't even touch another Shetta....I mean Jetta!

Those window regulators are a PITA and if you need to do all four...well have fun!
I gladly offer any help to fix other cars, but not on a Jetta!
I had my fill with them...well I take that back, I'll help you if you need my assist, but I doubt it since you're a Technician and I'm just a wanna be socket!

I can get you a good (well, not sure how good, haven't bought anything since Woody fixed the Jetta) price for them, same with the ignition tune up stuff. As for the dealer stuff it's harder for me to get them now. For the radio you can try searching on evilbay or the vortex.

As far as auto trans service goes, if it's working, don't touch it. You'll need VAG-COM or a comparable OBDII reader that will display the temperature of the trans fluid. There is no dipstick, and it's a PITA to deal with.

Speaking of OBDII reader, does anyone have one that I can use on my wife's 2000 Jetta??? The check engine light has been on for about 6 months now :stickoutt I guess I should figure out what's causing it...

I just wish that car would die so she would buy a new car, but she likes it for some reason and won't get rid of it.

All I can say is I'm glad my brother in-law took the Jetta...it was free and I fixed everything that was wrong at the time, so I don't feel bad.
Of course now he tells me the brakes are squealing....sheesh, I wish that was all that was wrong when I had it.
I told him to take it to the dealer...I'm not touching...okay Hammer Time!
Can't touch this...can't touch this! I know it's in your head now! :D

Renn. I think I saw A driving it this morning...is it Silver? Doesn't look like the same model I had, so you may be in better shape....but than it's a VW so who knows. Oh, and I also saw you taking the V/yard cut off in your M3!
