Alright, so I just purchased the 1990 BMW 750il about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Took it to the DMV and in order to complete the transfer of title I have to get it smogged. It ends in October so thats also why they want it done soon... Heres the problem. When I bought the car the previous owner mentioned to me that the speedometer and tachometer would stick, but if you tap the side it would start working again. He also mentioned that the more you drive it, (He hadnt driven it for a while) then it would start working better. Thats where I guess he was wrong... I used to be able to tap it and it would start working. Now no matter how hard I Hit the dash it doesnt work. Took it to dealer and they said it will cost about 1138 dollars for the part with labor included. Something about how its hard to replace that as they have to replace the entire unit, and how it is programmed just for that car....Now that is a lot of freaking money...Anything I can try or do before I pay that much....

Im having some problems with my cluster as well. yeah $1100 is a lot to spend. This is what I would do if I was you. I would just find a good used cluster and install it and take your chances. a used cluster will run about 100 bucks. and it is easy to install. maybe less then an hour to replace. Just find a link on directions on "how to change cluster light bulbs" and vola!! your done.

Just remember that 89 and newer 7 series have different clusters then 88 and older 7 series. the 89 and newer clusters have a blue backing panel with the "code" chip on the cluster. the 88 and older have the "code" chip in the brown plug that connects to the back of the cluster.

good luck.
shouldnt be too bad. save your money and make sure if you buy a used cluster that it works. these damn e32s have a bad rep of the clusters going bad. I would pay a little more for a cluster that is a known good cluster instead of getting a cheeper one that says its "dont know the working condition"

Get in touch with Mark Forman at BMW, his number is 201 263 8234. He helped me out with mine. Good luck. This was in June of this year.

Ok, ty you all for the information. The only thing I am worried about is that the dealer said that the reason it costs so much is that it has to be "programmed" for the car as it is made for each car. I think he is full of crap. Do you know if that is true?

When I disconnect the cluster I wont have any problems with it forgetting what the miles on the car is correct? I found this link and it is very straightforward in regards to how to take off the cluster. Also, would it matter that I got any 7 series cluster? or does it have to be a 750il cluster for 1990 year.
