View Full Version : trunk shocks blown?
JT///M3 08-05-2007, 08:37 PM When you guys unlock your trunk, does it just pop up like 2 inches or does the trunk actually open up all the way? I'm wondering if my trunk shocks are wasted since they don't prop the trunk up fully. I have to lift it up and then it seems to hold the trunk open, but that doesn't seem like how it should have been designed.

+1
board57796 08-05-2007, 09:41 PM Mine pops up about an inch but once I give it some help it will open all the way from there on its own, and I don't have to hold it. When my shocks were bad it would barely pop up and I'd have to hold it.
JT///M3 08-06-2007, 03:24 AM ok, good to know. Seems like my shocks are still good to hold it open, but not push the trunk lid up. I have to give it a push to full open, which at that pt, it stays up. But I guess that is normal?

wow, this is weird seeing someone who normally posts on the other section I most frequent post here :)
badman70 08-06-2007, 05:57 PM this should be normal. I just replaced the trunk shocks w/dealer shocks on my 95' e38. i think there were ~$28 each. My roomate's 98' M3 does the same thing.

If the trunk shocks could open the trunk lid fully, I imagine 9 out 10 dentists would recommend BMW's.:D
crewdog843 08-07-2007, 12:39 AM ....not to mention cosmetic surgeons.....
My wife complains that the boot lid is too heavy....where can I find some 'dentist recommended' shocks? Maybe if she got smacked a couple of times in the schnozz, she'd stop complaining.

Uh oh...sounds like its time to either plunk down the cash to upgrade to the hydraulic auto trunk opener...or trade up to the new e65/e66 7 that has this option...or a new BMW Touring or SAV that has the auto rear hatch! :D
It's only money. :D Here's the hydro unit (#10) part nbr: 51 24 8 236 505..you'd obviously need the whole system though. ;) :lol

crewdog843 08-07-2007, 08:27 PM Does it for me....maybe I could save a few bucks by just having her drive her own car for a change.....talk about heavy....I tried lifting the tailgate of her Sequoia and damn near got a hernia.

i wonder how much that is....hmmm
greene08 08-08-2007, 11:07 AM The operation is normal. BMW did not configure the trunk to open all of the way in the off chance you would accidentally hit the button while walking away from the car and someone would see the open truck and take whatever is inside (or tear through your seats to get in the cabin).
