View Full Version : 335i Homelink & garage door opener won't sync
dmorris900zxi 08-01-2007, 09:02 PM Hi,
I've had my 335i for 1 week and I can't get the garage door opener to sync to my mirror. I can't get to the "learn" step because the mirror and remote are not linking.
tried two different openers
cleared out the homelink (Press button 1 & 3 until rapid flash)
held the opener numerous different distances from mirror
tried seperate buttons on mirror
gone to homelink website and followed instructionsI was talking to a guy yesterday who has a 328i and he is having the same trouble.
Tried to search this forum and found one link that discussed having a european homelink version on the car.
I have a service apppointment on 8/13 when I get back from travel. Just curious if this is a common issue.
Thanks in advance.
brokenbimmer 08-01-2007, 09:26 PM I had a problem like yours when I first got my 335i, but it turned out to be my ignorance. Apparently, new garage door openers have a button you have to press with the Homelink button AFTER programming the car's Homelink with your remote. A friend told me about it, and sure enough, for security you have to have access the the inside of the garage. Makes sense, I just never had a new secure opener. Who knew.
dmorris900zxi 08-01-2007, 09:37 PM Thanks for the input.
I'm having a problem with the initial syncing between the opener and the homelink mirror. You are supposed to push the door opener and homelink button for about 15 seconds (or less) and the LED on the homelink is supposed to flash rapidly. I can't get it to flash rapidly. Therefore, I don't believe the mirror and door opener are syncing. Pushing the "learn" button on the garage door opener motor does not help. The door still does not open.
yj bill 08-01-2007, 09:38 PM There's a number in your owners manual to call, they'll walk you thru it
SocratesBMW 08-01-2007, 10:00 PM Yep, you have to clear it out, use the hand unit and then press the learn button on the garage unit and hold the Homelink button again until it flashes.

Zimmy1993 08-02-2007, 12:08 AM Any luck yet?
Try this:
1) clear everything out, start from scratch.
2) once cleared out, press button number 1 on the home-link and then almost simultaneously, press the opener button. Aim the remote at button #3 and you might have to move it around a few inches, back and forth, and it could take a few seconds.
3) it should flash rapidly, and if so, press the button #1 again and see if the door opens. If not, go in and press the learn button on the opener itself.
4) back at the car, press button #1 again until it goes from a rapid flash to a steady glow and release and press again. You have to do this about 3 times for the cycle to learn the signal.
I hope this works. I've done several openers for my clients and I'm (lucky?) to be 100% successful at getting them to work, so I'm positive it can be done
Beer Goggles 08-02-2007, 12:48 PM Most new openers are rolling code. So you just have to program the opener and not the car.
Look on the back of the garage door opener. There should be a button that says "learn" press it, then just go hold down the homelink button and it should be fine.

If its rolling code you have to program both. The car doesn't have a seed code. First you program the car so it has a seed. Then you program the opener to the car.

That makes sense. I assumed it had some generic code in the system.

The above works for me....
Just a little more detailed (redundant?) info...
1) To clear: Press #1 & #3 simulatneously... hold it for 20-30 seconds until the light flashes rapidly
2) Just like what zimmy said
3) Just like what zimmy said... just make sure you need to press the homelink button within 20 seconds after you press the learning button on the garage opener unit.
4) Not sure about the light... but I usually press the button you used in #2 for 3 seconds and release... and press it again for 3 seconds and release... usually after 3 tries, your garage door opener unit light will flash to confirm... That's it.
Good luck!
dmarsh11 09-01-2007, 10:21 AM I had the same problem with a Lexus IS250 and I followed the steps a dozen times, but could not get the button to flash rapidly. Then I saw Zimmy's post (specifically step #2):
"2) once cleared out, press button number 1 on the home-link and then almost simultaneously, press the opener button. Aim the remote at button #3 and you might have to move it around a few inches, back and forth, and it could take a few seconds."
After I held button 1, aimed the remote at button 3 and moved it around a bit it flashed rapidly after about 3 seconds. I did then have to use the "learn" button on the opener motor, but it works great now!!! Thanks again.
leerambler 09-01-2007, 12:08 PM thanks for the info, wasn't ever able to get it to work in my e46 or the e92. sick of having the opener in the ash tray...
darcydancer 09-01-2007, 12:16 PM Their website was quite helpful when I had similar problems
335eye 09-01-2007, 09:27 PM The learn button on rolling code openers is sometimes hard to see. Should be near the little antennae on the opener unit.
If you're programming more than one opener, don't hold together the two outside homelink buttons before programming the 2nd opener. Doing so will clear the first one you just programmed.
rcroane 09-01-2007, 09:42 PM I had the same trouble. Try holding your garage opener on the back side of the mirror (between the windshield and the mirror). This worked for mine after many unsuccessful tries holding it in front or below the mirror.
Good luck.
I have two that I bought off ebay, one looks like all the others black with numbers in white, the other is said to be off a 1995 740i, and the numbers on it are black and more rubery in texture. This one I cannot get to work right, it takes forever to blink fast if it does and it never learns the code. I tried the other and it worked first time.
Any idea why the first one did not work? Is it too old and does not work with a rolling code?

Had similar frustrations with Homelink until I repositioned the opener on the backside of the mirror between the windshield and it worked first time for 2 doors.
Taylormade 03-04-2008, 10:21 AM I had no problem with programming our 335i. Perhaps you're just not waiting long enough for the programming of the mirror from the remote. I suppose it is possible that you could have a defective homelink system. You could always take it to the dealer and demonstrate to them that the mirror won't synch with the remote.
You already know about the "learn" button on the garage door opener itself which has nothing to do with the problem you are having.
As I recall, it took well over 20 seconds for the mirror to start flashing rapidly.
TeaRoy 03-04-2008, 01:52 PM I found a fix for mine. I have two garage door openers for my garage door - and I could not get the 'flashing' that you are talking about. Exact same problem.
I went out and bought a 4 dollar keychain-garage-door-opener and sync'd that one to my garage door opener. Then I used the keychain opener to sync / send the code to the button on the mirror.
My assumption (may be way off - I don't know) was that there was some sort of scramble or protective mechanism in the garage door openers that came with the unit - but as soon as I used the cheap keychain one - it worked exactly as the manual said it would. Maybe worth a try.
bdog2001 06-12-2008, 02:37 AM Read and re-read all these homelink posts. Read and re-read the manual. The homelink website. Called them on the phone. Tried new batteries. All different angles. Keychain remote. 2 large remotes. None worked. :(
It's my first BMW. Had three Audi S4s before this. Oh and a Prius. All of them could open my garage door.
It's funny. The car broker chick that dropped off this beautiful brand new 335i right off the boat, wouldn't program the mirror. It was the ONLY thing I asked her to do on the car on my walkthru and she replied, "oh. you do that at home. If you have trouble, see page #111 in your manual. If you still can't get it, there's a number and a website..." Now I get why she was so afraid. She knew it was a piece of junk and wouldn't work anyway.
Nothing like spending $595 for a $.02 part that doesn't work. Now I get to take this $52,000 BMW alllllllll the way back to the dealer to make THEM point the remote at the mirror and have it not work. But apparently, I am not alone.
Way to go BMW. Your attention to the little things (a manual that doesn't fit anywhere in the car it belongs to, no spare tire to go with my non-runflat 19s and an overpriced rear-view frigging mirror that doesn't do squat) is pretty disappointing.
Maybe I am still an Audi guy.
edjalu 06-12-2008, 11:48 AM Here is the solution put you remote betwen the widnshield and your mirror. not in the front follow the manual steps and it should work I got my working like that. I found the solution somewhere on the web....
do not point it to the mirror just put it behind betwen mirro and windshield
TeaRoy 06-12-2008, 09:37 PM Mine works fine.
