I am the proud owner of a 335i convertible for about three weeks now. This is my first BMW and have a question about the heat of the engine.

After I have driven the car at normal speed for 10 miles or more, I notice that the hood is VERY hot. It is so hot that I cannot keep my hand on it for more than a few seconds. Oil temperature is 230-250 degrees.

Is this heat normal? If so, does the high heat damage the paint on the hood after the passage of time? Please advise.

That is normal. Mine runs around 240F, + or - 15 degrees. I've read that direct inject engines are designed to run hot, but I don't know about the paint. I know TDI jettas have been around for years (I've had a couple). Their hoods get hot, and I've never seen a faded one. Besides, the paint has a really long warranty. I doubt that it will be a problem.

I don't know too many cars that when your turn it off it's cool. Most cars will be "hot" for over an hour after use.

Thanks for the info Brokenbimmer. I wonder if other 335i owners have experienced the high engine heat/hot hood.

Yeah my 335i is hot after it's been driving. My oil temp is max 240F. It takes an hour or so for the engine to gets cooler.

Yes its normal, they all do it and its normal. Disregard anything you hear from anyone else who tells you there is or was any overheating issue. I've been driving my car hard this summer in 90+ degree weather and its never been over 240-250 and I do not even have an oil cooler.

yep, my hood is hot. I noticed it and also felt it's hotter than any other car I've had in the past. (how the hood feels, not the oil temp)

Welcome to the community. 230-250 is pretty normal, I wouldn't worry unless you get over 280.

Think black paint sitting in the California sun. Probably gets much hotter than what the engine can do. I wouldn't worry about it.

Well there are two small extreme heat producing turbos about 12" from the hood. FYI don't touch those either.

Only 800 miles so far, but my 335xi seems to hover somewhere between 230-240 even in the low 90's.
