Been working with Paul at Cosmo to get an intake in my 540 6 speed. Install went very easy and I used an AEM dryflow instead of the oiled K&N filter. The intake tube is 3.5" and I sized a AEM dryflow from Summit. Being this close to the MAF I didn't want to take any chances on having it get goobered from filter oil.

Does it come with the heatshield?

Yes it does and its fiberglass not sheetmetal= no heatsoak.

How much did the whole setup cost?

How much did the whole setup cost?

$140. I priced out the stuff= filter, elbow and heat shield material, felt lazy (I have made countless ones for other cars I have had) and took the easy way out. Took all of 20 minutes to install and tweak rather than multiple trips to HD and Lowes while wasting hours in the garage when I could be playing with the little one.

wow...very nice!

Good Bang for the Buck!

do you feel any difference with the standard butt-dyno?

and does it come with that plug already installed (for the earlier E39 cars' sensor)?

also, just needs a cover (like the ECIS models) to cover that filter (some cops ticket for that in CA which really sucks)

Why doesn't this system collect air from inside the fender? If the air filter element was contained in a box with inlet air taken from the fender, the heat shield would not be needed.

The heat shield acts as a "box" when it seals against the hood. Here is the link to Cosmo Racing where you can select true cold air intake ($140) or the short ram and heat shield I did ($165.00 sorry I forgot I had to kick in an extra $25). Yes it does come with air temp sensor fitting.

I originally tried the true CAI with the filter in the fender. However the Eurosport M5 bumper I have puts a large fog light right where the filter has to live. Therefore, because it couldn't fit I talked to Paul at Cosmo and we did this set up.

The SOT o' meter says negligible gains so far but it needs a bit of driving for the ECU to adjust. I felt a bit more grunt after two short trips with a nice V8 snarl 4500 to redline. You guys won't be disappointed!

OH NOES!!!!

So my Dinan CAI won't work with my M5 front bumper???

That CAI may be a little different. There was NO way mine would fit. Do you have the M Tech or Eurosport M5 bumper?

I bought my bumper from eruospec....

It's a replica M5 bumper. I'm hoping it fits *fingers crossed*

Just ordered the true CAI. Not bad for $95.50. I'll post pics when I get it installed.

The Cosmo racing also provides you with the filter but you purchased a dry filter AEM from Summit .. So what was the cost for the dry filter from Summit ?

You can delete the Cosmo filter I think Paul said it'd save $20 or so. The Dry Flow was $38 shipped from what I remember-I actually had the dryflow from another car that I never used it on.

What size dry flow filter did you use?

I've been recommending their intakes vs. $$Dinan$$ for longer than I can remember. Congrats, that color looks awesome. I myself made a heatshield myself and used a generic tube that places the K&N filter behind the foglight. Even though the heatshield might be pointless since the filter is donw low, I still feel better that I made it ;)

GTP540, why did you not get the intake that puts the filter lower? I've had countless CAI on different cars that kept the filter down and low w/o a single problem of hydrolocking like some people worry about. Also, will you post where you got the dry filter from, I'd like to do that also...tired of cleaning :)

very tidy and neat install, I like the blue theme you have going there. Well done.

I used a 5 inch 3.5" opening AEM Dry Concial I got from Summit Racing. Any larger (9 inch is the other option) will not fit behind the M5 bumper (due to fog light placement of the Eurosport Fog light anything larger than a 5 inch filter will not fit.

Going to email tonight to find out if they do the heatshields on their own as I already have CAI. Hopefully they'll ship to UK too!

James, the issue of hydrolocking wasn'ta factor for me, for some reason the placement of the filter by Cosmo with a true CAI would not fit behind my M5 foglight Paul (from Cosmo) and I tried a few times to get it to work ( I have a Eurosport M5 bumper). I then used the heatshield short ram set up he sent me. The heatshield in actuality is flexible fiberglass and does not heat soak whatsoever. Additionally, the intake temps with short rams and proper heat shields (per my readings from other cars I have had them in are almost ambient). Sure I woulda rather had the true CAI for the intake pulse effect but after a few high RPM blasts...intakes really do make a difference if you know what you are feeling (and not listening to just the sound).

They do sell them separately. Tell Paul that "George" with the 540 sent you! My car is actually on their website in the testimonials I think or customer cars section!
