View Full Version : coilovers racerx0911 08-01-2007, 02:27 PM guys why are coilovers the ultimate suspension setup? and how are the H&R coilovers? thanks brandon5069 08-01-2007, 02:33 PM Adjustability! You have a multitude of springs/spring rates available. You can adjust your ride height to your exact liking. On some you can even change dampening pretty easily... With shock/strut and spring combo's you don't have all these features..... racerx0911 08-01-2007, 02:42 PM true... rpg 08-01-2007, 02:43 PM I will also be buying a set of coilovers when I get my 530i but am worried about potential wheel/tire clearance problems. Is that the only thing I should be worried about when choosing coilovers for an E39? Wheel spacers are the remedy but if I can avoid them, all the better. Also, for reference, some manufacturers coilovers are not compatible with EDC and/or Automatic Self-Levelling and some are so just make sure they will work with your car are before buying. Here are a few coilovers available to me over in the UK. http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/products/search_car/product_sub.mhtml?car=bmw5e39;category=coiloverkit s racerx0911 08-01-2007, 02:46 PM well im running 19X8.5 in the front and 19X9.5 in the back...will i have a problem installing the H&R's? e39dream 08-01-2007, 02:55 PM coil over systems are used on circle track and other race cars so that they can fine tune the suspension to each track. On an e39 used for street duty the coil overs are generally used to achieve that "tucked in" look for the tires. I imagine the car's handling is changed for the better as well :) I personally have seen enough pics and e39s in person to spot a 5 on coil overs right away- there's no lowering springs that give the same appearance. racerx0911 08-01-2007, 02:57 PM yeah im thinking of pickin up andreNY's sooner or later... GTP540 08-01-2007, 03:29 PM I heard the Bekkers (sp) are great for daily driving. SehrSchnell 08-01-2007, 04:39 PM Coilovers are great, but not needed if your NOT going to be autocrossing or track driving A LOT. They are typically a lot firmer for everyday on the road driving. The main reason people buy them for their street drivers is so they can dump their cars. Personally, "dumping" a classy 5 series so low detracts from their sophistication. But, that's only my opinion. One achieve a nice euro lowered look and comfortable ride with a mere spring and shock set up (such as H&R and Koni or alike) for a fraction of the price. It was great for my 540i/6. Unfortunately for me, there are not many of these options for the M5 now, so I may be going the CO route. knux11 08-01-2007, 05:53 PM bekkers are ok, not bad but they're the only suspension i've had other than stock sport, so mnot much to compare them to. My accord on teins is WAY more harsh, bimmers are a pretty smooth ride stock so CO's make the ride, more average , i suppose. I got coilovers because I didn't wanna spend all that money on springs and struts (which costs a little more than the bekkers kit) and after havin them installed, wishing the car were a little lower. Or higher. Just the fact that I could make it so that I was satisfied with the height appealed to me. racerx0911 08-01-2007, 06:53 PM the only reason im interested in coilovers is because andreNY is selling them at the fraction of the price... i was going to get lowering springs but i realized that my car needs shocks too so for about the same price i can get andre's...hes selling them for a grand and mounts which my car needs... what do you guys think of this deal? brandon5069 08-01-2007, 06:58 PM It's a fantabulous deal!!!!! Jump on it with all fours. I'd buy it if I had a 540i... racerx0911 08-01-2007, 07:30 PM yeah im going to...how much are mounts usually worth? knux11 08-01-2007, 09:43 PM what brand are they? toystore 08-01-2007, 11:06 PM Coilovers are phenominal!! I have H&Rs on my 530i. I bought them for 1280 online, so $1000 for andreNY with little mileage is a great deal. The ride is definately firmer than stock, but not enough to be annoyed. The handling is incredible and I love being able to adjust the height to whatever I want. The H&Rs, though, do not have dampening adjustments, only ride height. I'd say go for it, you will not regret it. racerx0911 08-02-2007, 01:45 AM Coilovers are phenominal!! I have H&Rs on my 530i.
