On Saturday I started to pull my car apart. Today its all back together!

The whole project took a little longer than I figured but it was pretty cool to do. I still have to go get the car recoded, but almost everything seems to be working fine. My only issue is that I can't get to my IceLink menu. I press 6 and nothing shows up and there are not song names showing up. It has the european software so I don't have a nag screen. Overall I'm happy with how it turned out. I couldn't figure out how to post the pics so here is where I have them.

Wow - looks great!
Did you ever happen to get a quote for installation from the dealer?

Congrats on the install! The icelink is working correctly, but it's likely still writing to the Business CD player you removed for the NAV if the text was not turned off.

Email me directly with a copy of your post and I will reply with a config file to get you back up and running again.

Thanks guys.

MNsport, I had heard from other people that it would be over 4k to get it done at the dealer, which seems right. I saw a new navi computer going for over 2k alone and that is about what I spent for everything.

Thanks tom, I'll shoot you an email.

Edit 08-02-07

Congratulations on the install. I hope to do the conversion soon on my 540 wagon.

I do have a few questions (I hope I don't get flamed for it), I noticed on the Alpine website that they sell a Video Interface Cable that enables audio and video signal connection to any external monitor with RCA inputs.

1) Has anyone successfully installed the Alpine navigation using this interface cable? Was there any other parts that was required to complete the install?

2) Is this something worth doing?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Mike

Great looking install. Just have some questions for you.

1) Was your car pre-wired for that? how can one tell if their e39 is prewired for OEM Nav?

2) What exactly needs to be recoded?

3) What was your total cost?

4) If you had to do it over again....would you?

Unfortunately no. That was the bulk of the work. No BMWs come pre-wired for nav.
2) What exactly needs to be recoded?
Not really sure. My guess is something related to the IBUS.
3) What was your total cost?
2210
4) If you had to do it over again....would you?
Definitely. It was a cool project. I just wish BMW parts weren't so pricey.

Did the icelink issue get ironed out?
