In a recent post I stated that I had never rebuilt a m90. Well, that changed over the weekend. Just starting a project. Alot has been written in this forum about the no. 1 cam, modifying the oil spray bar, and banjo bolt. Thanks for all the insight.

Took off the valve cover. Sort of felt like opening a lost sea chest. Not in terms of condition but expectation of what would be found. We were pleasantly surprised to find it remarkably clean (bright metal, no sludge, no varnishing, etc.). We knew the engine had been worked on at some point in the last 10 years but do not have precise details.

The oil spray bar had not been modified and true to form the forward banjo bolt was loose. Of course, we will do the modifications before reassembling. Others have commented about their engines that they could see wear on the no. 1 cam. We did not go beyond taking the cover off, but I could not see or feel any wear on the cam surface. Does this mean it is OK or are there other measurements that should be taken to confirm condition.

Its an adventure.

as long as the point of every lobe is smooth all the way across, it is fine. if it is worn there will be a noticable ridge on either side of where the rocker rides. and the worn surface will be a little rough.
BMW now sells an up-dated banjo bolt(called a hollow bolt), it has a dab of blue lock-tite on it. if this is the right part #, it's 11 42 1 738 621 . i'm looking at the old package they came in, but it's ripped right after the 621. also order 4 new crush washers. replace them any time the banjo bolts are removed. they appear to crush easily.
