There is a semi-local e34 M5 for sale I'm trying to find out if its a good deal. So far I haven't got a reply from him about the specifics but from the ad it seems like it will at least be a well cared for car. Anyway here what info he listed.

92 M5
200,000kms on body
25,000kms on hand rebuilt engine
$50,000 in upgrades.. I have to find out what he specifically means by that.
$16,000CDN roughly $15,000USD

Just from the general browsing I've done on e34 M5's the price point seems to be about the same as a M5 with non-rebuild engine in the 120K miles range. Now IF this car turns out to be really clean, well maintained and documented then is it worth it?

And for the M5 owners. Maintenance will obviously be more than my other e34 but is it mainly because of parts, or parts and labor? I can do quite a bit of it myself and know that upkeep is necessary but how bad is it really?

I'll get back with more information and also try to fix my rambling post later.

i've only been an e34 m5 owner for about a month, but have had an e39 for about 5 years. Parts are generally more expensive for any M5, the e34 has a bit more wrt maintanance labor, shimmed valve adjustments, tb syncs, etc. Nothing that is a killer, imho.

92 is a pretty rare model year in north america, though 3.73 diff vs the 3.91 of a 91 makes it a touch slower in acceleration. Price sounds decent, assuming it's otherwise nice, and the engine rebuild was by someone who is very competent with the s38. Not knowing who did the engine work (and is there anything other than a 'hand rebuild') can't say if that adds much value or not.

generally, you can never be too sure about what is in the ad. I've seen "original paint" cars with bmw 'dot r' pannels, cars with 'valve jobs' that really mean valve adjustments. $50k in upgrades should be a pretty darn nice car!

Get a valve adjustment tool from Sir Tools and use the proper 15W50 synthetic oil, and you're set. Those things are beasts, and are quite reliable. Watch out for the bad synchros in the Getrag 280 box, they're expensive to repair.
