View Full Version : I bought an M5.

It's not a new one but it's one hell of a car. I bought it from a friend that just didn't want it anymore. It's a '91. It has horribly oxidized paint, I'm not sure if it will buff out or not. 134k miles, big Brembos up front, Eurosport, Bonneville Motor Werks chip?, B&B exhaust, new clutch, new suspension. Bilsteins Bav. Auto spings. The car sits low. I've had my M3 since March and I now see why older M cars are considered "real M cars". This car is an animal. I picked it up for $3k. I was wondering if anyone knows if this Brembo kit will swap over to my 98 M3. And I was sort of considering an engine swap too but I've read the archives and I'm not sure I want to go down that road. It's tempting though.

There's also a dent in the front passenger side quarter panel next to the hood. :(

It pains me to see such classic cars that have been mistreated/abused. Still, nice buy! :buttrock

Just FYI, you may want to post this or future E34-related posts in the E34 forum, as you'll get more feedback and relevant advice/posts.

Also, that S38 is one hell of a monster when it's running right, but it's equally expensive to maintain. I strongly recommend that you run a compression and leak down on it to determine its overall health.

The previous owner actually took care of the car mechanically. It runs like a raped ape.The paint is all original and when that dent happened it really pissed him off.

I tried a PM to the moderator about towing the thread to the E34 board. No response yet.

You paid $3,000 for that car??

AHH! Looks like a good deal but be prepared to spend a lot more money

and indeed the S38 is such an amazing engine

Congrats on the find though!

but you made some strange statements.. (no offense)

So why would you want to take parts off of it to put onto another car? I think the BBK + s38 + weight of the car is a great combo. Maybe I'm just more of a purist than anything else. I say you get her resprayed and enjoy her as she is...

Paint should buff out nicely if it still has some clear left and it isn't failing. Defiantly worth a shot!

Nice find, although I believe many of the people here will probably want you to keep it and not swap everything over to the M3.

Amazing find - check out GlossHaus (http://www.glosshaus.com/start.php)for the possibility of recovering the paint. Think they were still doing single-stage paint for those cars in Red - can't recall. Either way you have a chance.

As for the maint, it is more maint-intensive than your M3, but I'm sure you get the deal. For $3K, you pretty much stole it. I'd leave everything alone as far as the components and your M3.

Or, I'll give you $4K for it right now. :D

Yeah, 3k is a steal. The e34 M5 is superior to the e36 M3 for good reason.

Just remember M5=Money x 5... these cars cost 20k, whether or not you pay for it up front.

The car came with the stock brakes in a box, and I am definately not keeping the car.

The deal with the car came about last week. I was up at Road America with my friend who I bought it from. He has been talking about selling the car for a long time, but didn't really want to deal with it. I told him he should take it to get detailed and throw it on eBay. He said why don't you give me 3 grand and get it out of my drive way. I did. I've always wanted one of these cars and this is a good opportunity to enjoy one for a while and just get rid of it. Believe me I'd much rather keep this car and get rid of the M3, but I don't want to deal with the maintainence. Really the only thing neglected with it is the paint.

So getting back to the brakes, will these go on the E36?

Not without rotors (and probably adapters).

Since you got such a good deal on the car, are you offering it for sale at the same price? I'll offer 5 on it, and I'm lowballing you if the car's got a good interior and mechanicals.

I'm getting alot of PM's about selling the car, but I'm for sure going to put it on eBay in a about two months. It will have stock front brakes. I'll describe it thoroughly and honestly with lots of pics, and I'll probably put it up with no reserve. There are a few things I'd like to clean up and fix on the car first. And at the same time, enjoy driving it. I'll bump the thread when the auction starts. And to answer a couple peoples questions, the interior is in great shape.

If that paint is cooked, you can imagine the bushes are too, and anything else that is plastic and left out in the sun like that.

nice pickup tho, congrats

Okay - let me try to answer a few of the questions you raised.......

1) Bonneville Chip? - That is an early Conforti Chip for the M5. I notice most M5's have been running the Mark D'Sylva EAT chip as he has mapped the best curve for that motor.

2) Brembo Swap - short answer is no. The Mounting tabs and the Caliper Offsets are different.

3) The car should remain intact and in one piece - not gutted and / or parted out. These are classics and even though some here may think its rough - if you put it on ebay there is someone out there that will take this care and put it back to its former glory and appreciate exactly what it is.

I am not one of those purists that demands that every car be in concours condition. God knows there are enough of them on the E30/M3 board I have to deal with over there. I believe these cars are to be driven - but please don't strip the car and part it out/ swap it out / yada yada yada.

On another note - your buddy handed you (for $3000) a $9000 car. So if you sell it you have a built in $6000 profit as it sits today without one more $$ spent - Best of luck - JT

congrats on your new toy, and for getting an amazing deal. try to buff it and wax it if it would help, otherwise you may need to go with a new paint job. you should also clean the engine compartment, then it will be awesome. again nice find on a beauty.

Thanks for the info.

1) I'm going to leave the chip alone, the car runs fine the way it is.

2) So you're saying the calipers will not work on the E36 even with the right brackets?

3) The motor swap is just very tempting because it's a cheap way to make my M3 stupid fast. I'm fairly certain I'm not going to do it though.

The car is a blast. The only problem is it's brutally hot here right now and the A/C doesn't work. So I haven't driven it for the last few days.

amazing find. So have you tried polishing out some of the hood in those pics, or is half of it oxidized and half not? Probably some repaint work, i'd imagine.

You can easily get sucked into restoration, if you want to get rid of it, i'd try selling it before you do much, other than some basic detailing. I think 9k is a little optomistic given the market right now. I picked up a pretty nice 91 for 10k about a month ago that was in nicer shape cosmetically, and everything works. You can easily double your money though, i'd bet. If you plan on keeping it, i'd do a compression test, make sure it's healthy and then go to town...
the days of "m5's are 20k cars" are not what they used to be. Clean low milage cars are in the high teens. There is a really nice red car for sale on the for sale page for 11,250 right now.

I put a couple coats of wax on that part of the hood to see how it will look. Right now I'm in the process of clay baring the car. I'm going to run a buffer over it next. There is only one small section of the car that has been repainted, the left rear door below the molding only. Everything else is absolutely all original. The bummer is the dent on the right fender. I'm going to see about paintless dent removal.

I agree $9k is optimistic. I'm watching the white one on eBay, it has more mileage but it's in better condition. Current bid is $7600.

I'd love to get another one of these cars some day but red would not be my first choice.

That thing needs a lot more than wax. BTW, all of you saying Zaino.. have you ever used it? Zaino doesn't carry anything that offers the sort of correction that this m5 needs. It will come back, but its going to need professional help. I can tell you right now the bumpers are done for, but the rest paint looks to be repairable. Look on autopia.org for a detailer in your area. Paintless won't be able to repair that dent correctly because of location. They will be able to smoot it out, but it will not look perfect.

i agree. I'd start, as the OP did, with clay, then a mild compound with a wool pad and a rotary buffer. Then sometype of oily/glaze/sealer/polish, possibly still with the rotary/wool pad combo, then again with an orbital and the polish. Need to "feed" the dried out paint. Then some wax, i'd do a carnauba by hand. Might be worth trying to wet sand the bumpers, or at least a small area just to see if it helps.

You can certainly make it look a lot better, if you're just going to throw it on ebay.

You've pretty much summed up my plan. I might actually remove the bumpers and respray them though. I did that to my 911 and really liked the results.
