View Full Version : M3 vs Subaru WRX
No fear you guys (unless you race from 0-30mph only, and/or his Subaru has modified turbos)!
Thanksgiving Day, 1999. In Redlands, CA of all places, there had been 4-door RHD Subaru Legacy with the new Impreza Turbo engine testing around town (there was a 'first impression' drive on this car a year or so back in R&T). I saw it three times and was told by the driver that it was Subaru's test car for the new Impreza coming out in '01. Sure enough, this sucker was pretty fast. Same 97 M3 (221HP, 10-lb flywheel, etc), Rhonda as a passenger, we punched it from about 30-90mph...dead even. He said he had 'closed the doors' on many M3s prior to this...
Well, as many of you may have already read the new Sport Compact Car magazine, the new Impreza has been tested (so now I can talk about it, ;) ), and I was there. Car was very cool to drive, but, as you can see--a 91mph trap speed won't be able to challenge many M3s on the highway (just compare that with the other rides' trap speeds in that write-up and you'll be able to easily tell which ones are the fastest sprinters..and I'll save explaining any more highway race stories on the way to that photo shoot, ;) ). Of course that's not what the WRX is meant for--catch him at a stop light and if he takes off right you'll see one of the quickest 0-25mph launches you've ever seen. But after that, hmmm.
All credit to the Subaru, though, with its POTENTIAL. Bang for the buck, especially once modified, cannot be surpassed by other new cars on the market! But, although I like the new looks, I wish it had the old Impreza or Legacy body that I ran into that Thanksgiving day. I think it would have been a bit faster. CYA>PM3
Mine will be here in a month. Chip available in June, so I'm told. Then we shall see what we shall see. I just hope it doesn't totally clown my M3 too too badly by the time I'm done with it.
so what's the final price, if I may ask? Were you one of the ones that got 'into' the computer system holding the waiting list? Jk, ;-)..CYA>PM3

I am honestly counting the days. If this car is the tuner darling that I think it will be, it's going to be one fun car.

Oh I am sure it will be! Saw a real nice one at the NOPI/SEMA show, and technically that car wasn't even out yet! You'll get your hands on some 300-400rwHP, no problem. CYA>PM3
Kritpoon 03-08-2001, 03:57 AM man talking about the Subaru..... how about those WRX STI 22B... and now we are just waiting for the Mitsubishi to bring their little version of EVO VII... I have seen so many of them back home (Thailand) and wants to get one when I go back. But the price are soooo expensive for ex. WRX STI will set you back $100k easy and so as EVO VI. Anyway, I can't wait to see how the WRX perform on the street with the chip + 4 wheel drive.
I saw a 22B on the 91 eastbound freeway here in southern Cali, RHD and everything! Turned out it was the one used in the "Cannonball Run" race in early 98, which of course ended in Southern Cali..unfortunately I was in my 4-banger Jeep CHerokee so I couldn't keep up with him for more than a few secs..what a great lookin' car that is!
About the EVO VII, I was looking forward to it too, but it looks like it may be coming as the same, Japanese-spec EVO VII. It may turn out to be a hopped up Mistsu Mirage. The dealer told me it will be a turbocharged car, but we may see a hopped up version of a Mistubishi we already have here with the EVO VII badging, :(. I just hope the individual that told me is wrong, because that IS one car I wanna see here!
BTW, I was just in Thailand (Phuket) last November for a few days. I went to Malaysia to watch the GP and visit a real good friend...what an awesome place, Thailand! We rented two CBR900s (there were only four 900s on the island, the rest were race-lookin' 400's) and just thrashed up and down the island. Was only $24 for 24 hours!!! No insurance though, and they take your passport for their own insurance...pretty scary. I really didn't want to 'eat it', that's for sure. And a few close calls we had! CYA>PM3
Kritpoon 03-08-2001, 06:31 AM Cool... Phuket is really lovely... well I have only been there twice anyway. hey if you ever in Thailand (bangkok)... give me yell I can show you around. ehehehhehe...
With my luck I'll have the only worked WRX running 15's at the track. LOL
If that happens, my friends have instructions to shoot me when I'm not looking.
I was kind of disappointed in the new imprezas front styling. i liked the previous one a lot better... Also, i wish we would get something like the 22b here. Yeah, its cool that theyre bringing the wrx here(FINALLY) but it doesnt even make 250 hp, i dont know i was just hoping for something a little more raw. I saw a MITSU EVO VI here the other day and i was trying like mad to catch up to him to see how he got it but i couldnt... Probably one of those sun import cars or something.. too bad they dont make a left hand drive skyline =\

Now that was pretty funny. Well, even if you get 15s (we all know you won't, ;) ) I am sure your sixty foot times will be like 1.5 seconds..that would be hysterical. CYA>PM3

Honestly though, when you're talking about turbocharged factory cars, with a tuning market backing it up, it really doesn't matter that much. Look at the S4s: I've seen real acceleration runs that put a chipped (only) Audi S4 at 0-60mph in 4.9s and 1/4 in 13.1!
Those EVO VIs are badass! I got to check out a "Tommy Makkinen" version while in Malaysia..oh the interior! Red stitching..so nice (known as the EVO 6.5). They are the most fun to ride in. I got to ride in an EVO V putting close to 300 HP to the wheels and man it was fast.
Anyways, I learned that the reason Skylines are all RHD is because the way the engine and turbos sit, not allowing the steering assembly any room on the other side. I have read in some magazines that the Skyline R35 may come to US shores however!
There's ONE guy in the world (to my knowledge) that has converted an R32, in the Netherlands I think. He told me it took him an entire YEAR to do it. What a PITA! CYA>PM3

Excellent! Hey, do you by any chance know of a rich guy in that area named Pong something? His cars are on my 'Exotic Owners Gallery" pages on my website. The guy has a modified R33 (350+HP to the wheels) and an R34 in Thailand and then he has a Ferrari F355 for his business trips to the states! WTF! (BTW, he says he autox's a lot there with his Skylines) ..maybe you know him! CYA>PM3
The Skyline GT-R IS available stateside. Check it out here (http://www.skylinegtr.com). According to that site there are a few more than 1 GT-R that has been converted. A Skyline GT-R is the car I want to get after my planned next car is done. I'd actually like the black Vspec R33 Motorex currently has, but don't have 50k laying around. I plan on having a GT-R for my winter car hehe

Yes I know! THey're bad ass. I drove/rode in 3 of them (two R32s and Hiro's R34). Problem is they are TOO freakin' expensive! I was looking to get one last year when I totaled the 97 M3, but they wanted $38k out the door for a 92 or 93 R32 with 45k miles! At first I was like, "hmmm" but then I realized I could get a brand new Audi S4 for that amount! So I settled for a 95 M3 instead, :) CYA>PM3
Kritpoon 03-13-2001, 02:35 AM PM3.... I don't think I know a guy name PONG.... diammm.... i saw his pictures on your website and I must say that guy has some cool cars man....... all I have to say was WOW........ and he even have a friging Ferrari for his business trip in the US!!!!!!!.....
