View Full Version : BayBimmerz 50 Mile Thank You!
e28Jay 03-02-2003, 10:17 PM I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that showed up. Thank you to Charlie for taking the lead and thanks for the awesome weather.
Sorry there was not as much organization as I would have liked. We will do it again and this time with something fun planned at the end. I think for our first try it went well.
Hopefully no one got lost!!! Everyone post your pics here!
Thanks,
Jay

mcher231 03-02-2003, 11:55 PM i totally missed this i wish i looked it up earlier i would be so down to go
hope there will be another one soon :-)
California6er 03-03-2003, 12:11 AM Man, 2 other people and I got stuck behing that damn camary in the beginning, by the time we would pass them, you guys were gone. We then missed the first hard left turn. We ended up going way far out on that road, then decided we were definately not going the right way. We turned around and looked over a map and foun what we did wrong. So we ended up doing the entire drive anyway, and when we got the the parking lot in the end, the last couple people were leaving, darn. Oh well, if we do it again, lets be more organized, in the beginnign we were all going in circles, and then everyone would stop and go in the other direction:dunno Oh well, ill post the pictures I got later.
And good drive the the black Z3, and red 325 ic.
iwannadinanm3 03-03-2003, 12:28 AM Yeah great meet :buttrock thanks for organizing it. How come you left when we were at that one uphill stop sign near the end? We got lost a little bit but dinan325ic managed to find our way to the final meeting spot lol. I heard one guy was video taping it too, anyone know who it is?

Well my car didn't make it out of the shop on time, so I hitched a ride with Joe and he had to leave early.
California6er
Ya we saw the three of you guys on Skyline when we were heading home. Sorry you guys got lost. But either way I am sure you still had a fun drive
We'll do it again and this time I'll have my car so I can keep the pack together.
Dinan330ic 03-03-2003, 12:43 AM That was so much fun. SOOOO many twisties, and we were all following each other very close too; kinda scary. What a great way to begin my spring break.
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 01:07 AM Way fun! Overall, that route might make a pretty fair WRC course. :D
Thanks for organizing it, I had a great time.
I'm going to try to attach a few images here for the first time, hopefully they'll work... Apologies for the quality but I've got this tiny 76k max file size to work with....
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 01:09 AM That image seemed to have worked, so here's the next...
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 01:09 AM One more...
Zoeb2s 03-03-2003, 02:40 PM What happened here, weren't you guys supposed to leave at 10:30?...I was there for like 5 minutes
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 03:24 PM I got there a little later than I had planned, about 10:10 or something like that and the group pulled out shortly after, like 10:15 or 10:20 at the latest. I was surprised too, glad I got there in time to join in.

What an ass...maybe next time we should go to a spot where there is a grocery store or something...I don't think they would kick us out since its most likely a plaza where there is more then 1 store, and a few of us might be going in and out of the stores to buy a soda or something...
Tom///m3 03-03-2003, 06:06 PM Ya, I BARELY made it. I figured everyone was gonna leave at 10:30 also, and I got there at 10:17 and everyone was rollin out already luckily I made it in the nick of time to join in, like a few other people. Great drive, some quick and sudden stops, which allowed for some close calls for rearends and things but otherwise great. The cyclists certainly didn't like our presence one cycler women yelled at us. Got lots of radar warnings, but the warnings never seemed to pan out to any visible police presence. I also, didn't realize that first road we got on was two laned I thought it was just one way being that there was no dividing markers, until a lexus rx drove by on the road  which quickly made me drive on the right side of the road. Can't wait for the next one!

haha yeah. that road, i think was calaveras. i remember going on there during the brewery meet. And yeah it's a 2 lane i was wondering if most of u guys knew it was 2 lane or not, cuz we were mostly hugging the inside corners, esp around curves! that was scary shit... and we got cussed out by a biker too lol. he was saying stuff like asshole, fuckers, and shit like that to most of the cars around this one turn :laugh
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 07:23 PM Tom, were you in a blue M3 with aftermarket exhaust, the one that ended up leading our subgroup through to the end after Jay and his ride had to take off? It sounds like it from your descriptions, either that or most of us had common experiences LOL.
I made a brief screech behind that blue M3 when we came zipping over a hill and everyone was stopped, but it was more of an initial over-reaction on my part that actually being particularly close, fortunately.
I thought Joe(?) in the lead car did a good job of slowing for the bicyclists, and being just a couple of cars back it gave me a good "slow down" warning before I could even see them. I don't know how well that translated to the folks further back though.
Even though some of these bicyclists are (bad word)s I'd rather not see anyone squish one, for obvious reasons. With repeats of this route planned for the future, it might be a good idea to come up with some ideas of how that safety margin could be increased, maybe via a "pace car" and/or more in-car communications. Dunno.
Tom///m3 03-03-2003, 08:07 PM David, yes that was me in front of you. Ya, I think a better safety margin would be in order, I mean it is fun to haul ass and take turns fast, but passing on blind corners and things like that are not a very good idea. The main close call that really sticks in my head was when the covertible 3.xx tried to pass a bunch of other bimmers as we were approaching a stop sign:eek: That created some problems once he tried to get back in and people were slowing down for the stop sign etc, that incident made me wish I had black seats, hehe j/k. It would be nice if there was some way to have better communication without investment in radios and all, telepathy :dunno heh is there some kind of handheld device for a group leader that would broadcast over am or fm for a good distance?
I was little unsure about leading because I was worried that I might miss one of the roads like (Joe?) did on that one sharp right turn that wasn't clearly marked. Luckily we got to the final destination, at one point I was really unsure we were going to the right way on the last road.
Tom
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 08:32 PM Hahaha, Tom that's too funny about the seat color...
I would like to thank you for thinking that the first road was one-way, that would explain why you were diving into the corners like that! :D Made things easy for me though, because after watching you fly in on the inside I knew it would be clear for me!
I liked the exhaust note on your car btw, maybe because I was directly behind you but anytime you were even about halfway on the gas at 35mph it still sounded like you were breaking the law somehow. :D It looked good too, although it seemed to have more play in it than stock.
I don't have any great answers for the communications and such. I have experience with CB, FRS and ham radio on offroad trips in my Jeep, and I can tell you that there's no perfect answer, even with added personal expense.
Anyway, no bicyclists were flattened and we weren't too maniacal. Like I said before, I think the lead car did a good job for our sub-group.
///DavidC 03-03-2003, 09:59 PM One last shrunken image...
It would have been nice to have a navigator along to take pictures/video. For most of the good parts I had to have both hands firmly on the wheel!
///RBR 03-03-2003, 10:28 PM Great turnout for the event. Great fun driving thru the twisties. Great weather. A thumbs up for the BayBimmerz crew.
Some cyclists, some cars, but not too crowded during the run  . That made the drive very exiciting. Going thru that curves with so much speed :buttrock YEEHAW!!!
Speed and risky manuevers are a lot of fun, but it is a good point that SAFETY was brought up. Ideas and suggestions or discussions regarding this matter will definitely make future run to be a blast.
Here's a suggestion: For a large turnout, why not have two (or even three) groups with two (three) lead car. In this case, no one gets left behind. First group leaves, say, 10-15 minutes ahead of the second group. Have a meeting point halfway, so we catch our breath. Then, again, leave in a staggered fashion. :dunno
Hey Jay, I like that idea with some FUN planned at the end.
Anyways, this was a lot of fun... WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE ALREADY???

Mickey 03-04-2003, 02:27 AM My suggestion would be to have someone drive the course a few days before and put balloons at all the funky intersections. I was part of the group that got caught behind a car on Calaveras and missed the turn. What a tiny sign!
I made it back to 680 when my kid got bored, so we headed back to the city. Next time perhaps we'll get further.
Jaded M3 03-04-2003, 07:33 AM Looks like it was an awesome meet, guys. Too bad I had to miss it! :(
P.S. Nice driving, Darren. :stickoutt

I was thinking the same thing! Ballons or something to get tha attention ot people to the odd intersections that are hard to see. Hey Mickey are you the guy with the 318 from the sf chrissy field meet? I was the guy with the blue m3 talking to you for a little bit.
Alex Rogo 03-05-2003, 12:38 AM Thanks Jay, for a good run on Sunday. I was amon those that didn't read the signs and missed the Calaveras turn. Eventually caught up with the cue entering CV. Had a great solo run over Palomeres. Look forward to the next one.

Mickey 03-05-2003, 08:16 AM Tom///M3: yes, at Chrissy Field I brought the family and a black hard-top 318is. That's now my wife's car. Two weeks ago I bought a 318ic, hellrot. Makes driving to my clients a lot more fun :-)

If you remember talking to the guy in a kilt, that was me! As soon as the State of California processes my latest vanity license plate my ride will be complete!
A pleasure re-making your acquaintance.
Fishgills 03-05-2003, 11:30 PM I have to say thank you as well Jay. I had a blast. Even though we lost half the pack at the end it was still fun! :alright
