I bought a 2000 540IT white on gray wagon about 4 months ago and have recently had Matt of Umnitza install the Projector39 with Predator Angel eyes about a month ago.

Matt wired the angel eyes to turn on when I start the car, my question is this; is it possible to wire the angel eyes to the first position of the headlight switch? If so, please provide details on how to re-wire to the first position of the headlight switch.

Thanks in advance for all replies and assistance.

Mike

BTW, I did a search and did not fine anything definitive.

You mean have them come on with the parking lights? If so, bmwtips.com has the write up on the Y harness. What the Y harness does is separate the parking light from the turn signal.

i installed my predator chromiums to come on/off witht the park lamps. Here's what did:

I unplugged the driver's side combo park/turn signal plug and removed the bulb. turned on the park lamps and then stuck the volt meter in each side until i found 12V constant and marked that wire.

I then used the Umnitza supplied T-tap splice on that wire and plugged the red trigger wire from the harness into that. There is a second trigger wire (brown i beleive) that is not used unless you hook up the remote feature, which i chose not to do.

In your current case the trigger wire probably goes to keyed power in the ECU. as in key on- rings on.

forgot to add this. The thread doesn't go into too much detail, but it may help...

TRUE- they may indeed have things wired differently on the wagons. Plus, i should also note that the predators alone i am sure wired differntly than when installed in conjunction with the projector P39s.

Just sharing how i did it on my sedan. hope it helps.

if you tap the angel eyes into your parking lights then they should come on when your parking lights are on

[Matt,

I sent you an e-mail..

So the procedure to wire the angel eyes as driving lights that was posted by glocati is for sedan only? How would it be done for wagons (more specifically 540IT)?

Thanks,

Mike

It wouldn't be done that easily for the wagons:) That's why we did DRL functionality on yours, remember the 6V/12V issue?

For the wagons, don't you have to tap into the rear tail lights?

reverse question, how do I make my AE lights comeon with the DRL instead of the Parking lights?

yes, i am curious as to what is different about a touring's front park lamps that one could not use the park lamp method that i did on my sedan? Should be the same 12V park lamp/combo turn siganl in the front one would think. Someone please educate me for curiosity's sake. Thx Greg

touring doesn't have a 12V circuit:) it's a 6/12.

Ok. Thanks, any more detail? what wire? thanks. To elaborate on the DRL method, remove passenger cabin filter, open electrical compartment under it. Inside locate the fattest reddest wire you can find and tap that for your angel eyes +. Run 2 leads from that +, one down each fender. Run your angel eyes negatives to the posts on the fender wells that have a black plastic tab with several brown wires- all grounds. Loosen the nut and put the wire behind the tab thingy- good ground is essential. Theres a ground point on each side.

now the angel eyes come on any time motor is on. all other lights work as normally switched.

Nice, exactly what I was looking for.

Yup, if you are in Vancouver let me know.

I'm sure I could just run a fused link of the battery or something simmilar.

Wagons are indeed wired very differently from sedans. I have many hours of research on this, and finally successfully wired my Depo Angel Eyes into my parking light switch. There is a lot of wiring to be done to pull this off, but it CAN be done. You just have to really want it.

First some background on the Touring parking lights. There are only 2 leads - one ground and one hot. The 'hot' wire only pulls 2.7 volts in 'parking' mode, while it pulsates a full 12v in 'turn signal' mode. Dumbest thing I've ever seen, and frankly wouldn't beleive it if I didn't see it and test with a multi-meter myself. That said, if you ta into the parking lights, your angle eyes will blink when you use your turn signals. To wire them as DRL is a short cut that some have taken. Others have wired them into the fogs.

In order to get the stock operation that you seek, you must use a relay ( used 1 for each side) as a switch. I wired the angel eyes to to a ground and the hot side of the relay. Then ground the relay, and provide it a contant 12v source. You then need to find a switched 12v lead to 'power' the relay (in effect, switch it on and off). I gave up searching in all the fuse boxes and just went straight to the LCM (light control module) and tapped into the parking light lead there.

See the attached drawing of the wiring diagram that I used.

Good luck, man. It's worth it in the end

aazevedo-thanks for the info. I was always curious about the difference in wiring on the tourings. Nice job on working around the diff, so that you can switch the AE's on w/your park lamps.

aazevedo,

Thanks very much for your input.

And thanks to everyone who has replied. This is my first BMW and I am extremely happy with it. In addition to the Projector39 headlights, I have also purchased the E39 M5 Bumper from Umnitza.

I just purchased a set of Piaa Super Rozza in 19's and will install them after I decide on which aftermarket coilovers to buy. I am currently looking at the KW Coilovers variant 2.

Once the above is completed, I want to install BMW navigation in my non-navigation 540IT. I am sure there are other things to do, but this will do for now.
