you mean take out the kidney's?!?!? why the hell would you do that?

It might look mean replacing the plastic horizontal grills that are between the kidneys and lights with tight weave black mesh......but i dont know....

I can't see the photo shop pics for some reason, but I can't imagine that I'd like it. Sorry NYJHL. I Don't mean to be rude. That's just my personal opinion.

now you need to put flames on the hood and swap in some old mustang headlights and it would be perfect!

whatever u do, don't take out the kidneys. If you look closely, they are meant to follow the lines on your hood.

Though no e34 were harmed in the making of this thread it is thought thatr one did want to harm their beloved E34.

Actually, the one with mesh instead of the horizontal plastic grill (but with kidneys) looks decent, at least in the photo. Reminds me too much of a P71, though.

I'm toying with the idea of removing the vertical grill from the kidneys (but not the kidneys themselves, of course), and installing some short plastic pipe inside and smoothing out the edges, so the kidneys look a bit like jet engine intakes. I imagine it'd need some mesh grill further back. Thoughts? (Photoshop? *looks hopeful*)

I would say go with a black mesh and keep the chrome kidney's, or even do a black chrome for the kidney's.

The silver mesh is just too much.

Narrow grill.

Ok, so the vertical plastic bars inside the kidney grills - they're to be removed. The inside of the kidney square trim is to be extended inward something like 15cm, basically as far as they'll go without hitting the aux fan. Basically, the kidney grills will look like intake tunnels for a jet engine (squarish ones instead of round, but whatever). The lips of these intakes are the squarish trim pieces. And at the end of this "tunnel" (whose profile is the shape of the kidneys, and whose opening is the kidney trim) would be something like window screen material - basically, as invisible as possible while keeping things from hitting the aux fan, to make these "intakes" look as deep as possible.

I'm having trouble finding a good pic to start from. It'd be one that clearly shows the vertical bars, and where the sides of the "intake tunnels" will be.

so, you are just wanting to fab walls that extend the opening of the kidneys toward the fan? will the intake be narrowed as it approaches the fan? and you want to be able to see the fan through these through unpainted mesh screen or have black mesh at the back(make the tunnels look like voids)?

Straight or slightly expanding tunnels.

Black mesh.

Voids is the perfect word to describe them :), thanks.

Some German engineer spent hours designing that front grill just so you could take them off and run a mesh grill. I feel sorry his hard work goes to waste.

goes to waste? Na! It sits proudly in my driveway still attached in all its glory to a beautiful e34 540 with a slight buzzard problem

id never consider actually doing this to my car, those Germans already designed it perfectly. Theres no way itd ever look beter than the way it already is (-the bird feathers)

You get an A for effort (and for appreciation. Thanks!), but it looked a lot better in my head. Maybe because mine are blacked out. Or because these are missing shadows.

The project? I have way too much work these days, but the last I got working on was the interior. Specifically, the dashboard, and trying to figure out where to put the shifter, such that it doesn't look like the driver giving the right passenger a handjob. One idea was having flappy paddles, but with a real clutch. Before that was peering into the can of worms that is the design of the engine itself. Specifically, I have an idea for a 1-valve per cylinder arrangement (using one of the 5-stroke cycles I read about somewhere), but judging its theoretical effectiveness goes well beyond what I know and understand about engines.
