Hey guys. Great site you have. First off, I'm 26 from Milwaukee and just bought a 97 740IL. Great car, Love it.

I just had the car up to my ,echanic for a pretty loud rattle/banging from up in the front end. I know the cars are notoriuos for chewing up the ball joints so I had him throw the car in the air and pry on everything with a pry bar. Everything is tight and the ball joints are tight. He pryed on everystabalizer bar, ball joint basicly everything that could rattle. Everything is good he says. What else up there could be causing this issue?

Well, if the suspension is good, what else is there but the engine....

Rattles I can live with, banging noises are something else though. My first guess might be the fan, or some part close to the fan. There's just not information in your original post. The plastic fender well might be loose, or a part of your disc brakes also. How about the strut, have you check the bolts on the tower?

It's only when hitting bumps while the car is in motion.

I'll check the other options you listed in the mean time. thank you.

There could be a number of things if the suspension is ok.

You could have engine mount issue. When you're looking under the hood, have someone shift it from drive to reverse a few times (pausing between each shift, and with their foot firmly on the brake), and see if that makes any noise.

You should also stick your head under the car (first put it up on jacks) to check for anything that may be loose, and I'm mostly referring to the plastic shielding (but if you see the engine dangling, then that might be a problem, too).

Finally, you may have a timing belt/chain problem.

Good Luck!!!!

Timing belt/chain problem?

The 4.4 uses a chain. The only issue with a chain that could be possiable is the guides wich I was under the impression was a great design in the 4.4.

I will check the motor mounts though.
