Hey guys. What is your take on this. Worth it or not? BTW, aloha all. Been a member here for a few years but haven't posted much in the Hawaii section.

Save your money and have and indy work on your car.

Indy? Could you explain? Thanks.

Not worth it for extended maintenance. You would be better off with an extended bumper to bumper warranty, which covers breakage.

Thanks guys. I'll put that money to "Mechanical Repair Coverage" from my credit union since I can't get a warranty from BMW. Here's what I'm considering:

84mo./75,000 add'l miles $250 deductible $3348.00
60mo./60,000 add'l miles $250 deductible $1913.00

There's also 50 and 100 deductible, but I don't mind paying $250, especially for BMW parts/repair. The premium difference between 100 and 250 is almost $1000.
So what would you jump on? My soon to arrive '03 has 38,000 miles and I tend to keep my cars for several years. Oh, and the MRC "Silver" plan covers:
• Engine
• Transmission
• Front Wheel Drive
• Rear Wheel Drive
• Steering
• Front Suspension
• Brakes
• Electrical
• Air Conditioning

I still think you would be better off keeping that money, and either ..

A) using that money towards a NICE set of tools and learn/work on your own car.. the guys here in hawaii are AWESOME and we can help you if its something you can't do

B) keep it and invest it, and fix the car yourself if something goes wrong

c) keep it, and pay an indy shop if you really have to, and you still end up ahead more than likely

D) keep the money and use for MODS!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I'm really inclined to follow option "D" but the SMG trans kinda worries me, especially after reading the post from oldbmwguy about his SMG failing at 41,000 miles. Apparently, if software can't fix it, there is no repairing it. He found out it needs to be replaced at a cost of $5000 just for the trans.:eyecrazy

I think extended warrantys are GREAT for used cars. My sister paid the highest option 1700.00 i think it was, for bumper to bumper (which was included her monthly payments, hardly felt) One A/C compressor, fan resistor, and 2 power window motors later (at different times) , she was already ahead. It helps that I was the repair shop doing the work. I waived her $50 deductables.

What's your repair shop?

Edit: Nevermind; saw it in teh other thread. Vidal Car Service. I'm so not up on Waipahu goings on... Gotta go there more and pick up some Tanduay for making rum cake.

You are buying an extended maintenance program, not the extended warranty. As such, I don't think the extended maintenance will cover any cost on a SMG repair.

Correct. The original intent of this thread was to decide on the "Mechanical Repair Coverage" offered by my credit union. Thanks for all the comments guys.
