View Full Version : Americans: Would you buy a 1 Series 5-Door?

BMW says no, but would you consider it? I know I would LOVE a nice 135xi Touring.

Personal preference aside, heres some logic as to why they should sell the hatch here:

- The coupe is too small and impractical. People wanting daily drivers or needing to carry more people will be strayed away from the 1 for this reason. It does go after a good market segment...the bachelor, the second car/weekend car...you know, the Porsche Cayman/Audi TT/etc crowd, but to open up their options, it would be very nice to see both.
- They already have it in Europe. It could not possibly cost all that much more to make it US ready and import.
- The E36 318ti was a flop because it was poorly designed, poorly built, and horribly underpowered. a 128 and 135 would certainly not be so. The 318ti also came out before 5 doors were as popular as they are now.
- Look at the success of other entry-5-door-sports. Audi A3, VW Golf/GTI,Toyata Matrix/Mazda3/etc.

So please, BMW, give us the hatch!

I'd rather have a 1 series diesel than the 5 door. :shifty

Give me a 135d 5 door manual with no I-drive! White and tan, please. :D

If I couldn't get that, a 135i 5 door manual with no I-drive would be sufficient.

I'd prefer the 5 door because it would be useful enough to be my everyday car, the coupe would work, but would be inconvenient.

I'd take a hardtop vert :P or a coupe or a hatch.
Dark grey or white with black interior, and ALL the toys.

If it looks anything like the 5 doors I saw in Spain then no. I thought they looked good in the pictures but when I saw them in person they looked absolutely horrible.

Yeah, I'd buy one. It'd come in plenty handy.

Not to mention I could probably make money from hatchhikers...

I die a little every time I see a hatch. I would much rather them focus their efforts on a diesel.

I'd rather have a coupe. It looks better. :devillook

i like everything about the coupe but the back seat is so small its basically useless for adults and the trunk also appears to be tiny. What they need is a 2 door hatchback, like the old m z3 coupes of the 90s

Wow, the british 3-door looks amazing. That's the one I would want. I had a 92 Civic Si (little hatchback) that I always felt connected to. I drove that car into the ground. I keep wanting to find another car that makes me feel the way that car did. That 3-door looks like it could do it.

the hatch just isn't all that useful. the cargo space is lacking even though it is a five door. plus it's expensive especially compared to other hatches out
there. the 135i would be sick but i just can't see how anyone could justify spending that much on a hatch that doesn't look all that great and doesn't do
what someone would buy a hatch for (swallow lots of cargo)

I would buy the 3 door new, and that's saying something, I'm gonna buy the coupe, but maybe a used one

Think of it more as a hot roadster with a big size trunk. Me, evetually after getting doing a few of the already out mods, that back seat may as well just come out, but keep the back for DD useage.

Because it goes like crazy. It's right in the Evo/STi territory and has more room than the coupe. The BMW equivalent of the STi and Evo, which I suppose would be the 335ix, is almost 20k more.

I'm not even considering the Coupe, but the availability of a 135i 5-door would have me selling my Evo in a heartbeat.

The 5 door is the only 1-series I would have. The three door doesn't really do it for me as much, with the hatch it looks cut off on the end (much like the E36 ti lineup)

I already have a 5-door hatch... a '07 VW GTI.

I don't like the looks of the 1-series hatches... gimme the coupe!!!!

that isnt a 1 series coupe, that is the return of the Z-shoe.

id buy it on looks alone, and the twin turbo powerplant

I wouldn't want a hatchback if it was given to me. They are so cheesy looking. They all make me think of a cheap Honda or something. Same thing with a wagon. I would never buy a luxury car that was a wagon or a hatch. In fact I don't think luxury car makers should even offer them. Sorry to you hatch lovers but I just don't get it.

The 1 hatch is ugly... The 1 Coupe looks pretty good.

Btw, the 318ti did not come in a 5 door; it was a failure because it wasn't marketed, and because you could get a GS-R Integra at the same time with a lot more hp for less money, not for the other silly reasons stated.

i find the five door practical, but the coupe is the best looking. i'd have to think really hard on which was more important to me ( practicallity or sexyness)

Looks like a Mazdaspeed 3 in the 5 door hatchback.

I hope the 2 door 135i doesn't sell good, that way I will be able to get one easier without a hassle, plus everybody won't have one. I really don't need a 4 door. Plus most people I know want to drive themselves in their car. If the back seat is too small, knowbody will want to ride in it, and thats GREAT!
Less weight in my car is whats important.

I think a 135xi 2 door would kick @$$. Grey with red/black leather, forget the nav/idrive and the bluegreen tooth. Just give me the 300hp, 6 speed, leather and sport pkg. OH a great stereo is a must. Don't like aftermarket hacking the dash.

Rather have the 123d 5-door over here.

Frogger

Within the realm of affordability, I want a 3-door 123d more than any car I have ever seen. I'd buy any 3-door 1-series though. (I'd buy a 5-door if it was the only hatch, to answer the OP)
