I posted this in the off topic forum, but I'm reposting it here to hopefully get some SoCal specific info like on training programs and such. I checked out MSF but they only list a program in NorCal.

Thanks,

Ok, so I've been toying with the idea of learning to ride a motorcycle. My dad was a doctor and in my younger days he made quite sure I was well aware of the possible negative outcomes of motorcycle riding, especially on streets with cars and such. Therefore I'm not sure if I'd ever actually buy a bike and ride a lot, but I'd still like to learn how just to check it out and also to be able to. Who knows though, it does look like a lot of fun. Those little bastards sure are fast.
I know some of you guys ride too and I'd be interested in any input on the subject. I figure it'd be best to take a class, so whats a good class to take in SoCal and how much are they? Any other input and advice is welcome.

I was thinking about it too but never got around to it. If you do it, tell me how it goes.

Im going to be taking a motorcycle class at a community college near my house.. they have a program at Mt. Sac.. they have lil 250cc bike to ride.. after completing this course, all you have to do to get your M class license is goto the dmv with the form saying you passed the class and take a written test.. i think the fee was like around $200? i cant remember exactly.. i cant find the paper right now.. but if your are over 21 or 25 something like that.. the class cost double than for those who are younger.. :dunno im not exactly sure on the price and age.. but its very close to that.. i plan to take this course in the summer

I took the MSF course about a year ago (LA Valley College) so I don't know if the fees have changed. Its about 200 bucks for people over a 21. You can actually obtain a waiver of the fees if you are below that age. CHP knows that the majority of all motorcycle accidents occur for people below this age. If you are over 21, trust me, it is probably the best 200 bucks you will ever spend.

I took a weekend course consisting of the 4hrs instruction on Friday, 1/2 day riding and 1/2 instruction on Saturday, and 1/2 day riding and 1/2 on Sunday. If you plan to take the course you should call soon since these courses are booked about a 1 month or 2 in advance. The classes will most likely take place at your local community college so you will need to get in touch with them directly. Call 1-800-227-5337 to get those numbers. Good luck.
