Ebay failed me, so I'm posting it again with a lower price:

1988 M5, Black on tan, 191k. Rebuilt tranny, solid motor. Overall not a bad start but definately a bit of a project car, hence the price. It has minimal maintenence records and has been sitting a while undriven. Runs fine, but drives a little sloppy(see below). Looks like it has a newer cat, so I imagine it will pass smog, although I have not tried.

Here is what it needs in my opinion:

Suspension and bushings(a must), paint, interior detail, diff mount(a must), tires(a must), tuneup.

Selling to fund an E30 M3(trades welcome?).

SOLD. Thanks guys.

If you're interested, PM me your info and I'll call you.

Guys guys, take it easy...one at a time. Let's not let all these responses get out of hand lol. No interest in a ~5k E28 m5?

IMO you are going to have a hard time selling that period. A Nice example of a E28 M5 is 10-14K maybe less if you find a deal. This car is 5K needs alot of work and still has almost 200K on it. It will be tough but you may find someone that has a softspot for this car and wants to rescue it.

Here's what I know...

The front driver's fender is not original(DOT-R). No idea why it was replaced. There is also the wave in the driver's door that you can see in the picture. Don't know where it came from.

Hey, the s38 has more longevity than most people give it credit for. I've seen them go 300k no problems before when properly maintained. This car definately has some life left in it.

lol man. You don't want an E28 M5 in need of this much work, believe me. You shouldn't have sold your E30. ;)

Nice car and I'd buy it if I could afford to "revitalize" it.

I have the record for the rebuilt tranny(4500 bucks!) and a few smog records. PO said he lost or tossed the other records at some point. Either way, if he was willing to spend 4.5k on the tranny, you know he wasn't too shy about spending money on his "old car."

I believe he parked it when the diff mount went south as he decided to get a replacement instead of keep spending money on it. Since then, it sat outside driven only every once in a while and the cosmetics deteriorated. Most of the isues with this car are cosmetic.

So to directly answer your question, no I don't have the records and cannot prove this cars maintenence history. The previous owner gave me the impression that he did take care of the mechanical side of things though.

Most of the mechanicals that need attention are easy. For the diff mount, you don't even need to drop the diff.

Pictures of seats and dash to come tonight when I get home. Don't have a compression tester, but you're welcome to bring your own and check yourself.

If I lived in SF, I'd love to come over and check the compression, but since I don't.

Maybe borrow one and do it?

I don't know anybody with one...so I don't have easy access to one. Otherwise, I'd be happy to!

I'm sorry but that thing would cost between $5,000-10,000 to restore to NEAR-factory spec. Then you have to consider it was obviously neglected for most of its life so there will be more stuff that breaks down and falls apart.

Still, I suppose $4,500 is somewhat reasonable. I've always wanted an E28 M5.

That's why I'm not asking 5000 to 10000 more. If someone wanted to make it a show car, sure it would take a lot of work. If someone wanted to make it into a driver that they could mob around in and have some fun with...they could do it on a budget still.

Considering the compression is fine, and one sold for over 3k with a bad motor on ebay...I think I've got the price set pretty fairly. I had no time for leakdowns today :-(
